McKAY – Neil Ross

December 17, 1930 – March 6, 2010

It is with sadness that we report the passing of Neil McKay on Saturday, March 6, 2010, after a year long battle with prostate cancer. Neil was 79.

He is survived by his loving wife Dauna, son Scott and daughter in law Chris of Olds, and brother Warren and nieces Shari, Lynn and Heather all of Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Jessie, his brother Morris and his first wife Kathleen.

Neil was born and raised in Regina, and went on to attend the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, where he earned degrees in history and law with distinction, graduating in 1955. He practiced law with Shell Oil, the Attorney General of Saskatchewan, and Canadian Pacific before going into private practice in Calgary.

Neil retired from his forty year career in law in 1995, devoting himself at that time to his lifelong passion for trains and model railroading. He and Dauna built a wonderful layout in their home “The Magnum Cum Flexibillis”. Together they attended many model railroad functions over the years, building many lasting friendships on the way. Those friends included the many members of the South Bank Short Lines model railway club, and his fellow employees at Trains and Such where Neil worked after retirement until just before his death, being surrounded by trains and people who loved trains.

In all of his endeavours Neil was known for his dedication, his sense of responsibility, and most especially for his passion that the right thing be done in all circumstances.

The family is most grateful for the care provided by the staff of the Chinook Hospice during Neil’s last five weeks, and for the care given by Dr. George Barr, a compassionate physician and wonderful friend. If friends so desire, memorial donations my be made directly to The Calgary Humane Society, 4455 – 110 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2C 9Z9 a tribute to the many Shelties that were a part of Dauna and Neil’s life over the years.

Condolence Messages

  1. Dave Audley :

It has been an honour and priviledge to call Neil “Friend”! I have worked with Neil at T&S, shared running and building
on Neil’s layout, enjoyed movies and
visits with both Neil and Dauna, and I am pleased that Neil took the time to
design and build the main mountain scene
on my layout! When we were at the NMRA
National in Seattle, we always found time for mid-afternoon coffee and ice cream! We railfanned together and then
competed in our club annual photo contest. Along with all these memories,
I will remember Neil’s wickedly sharp sense of humour, his scrupulous honesty
and integrety, and his kind and gentle
demeaner. So long for now, my friend.

My son and I came to know Neil from our shared interests in Model Rail through our many visits to Trains & Such. It was always a pleasure to spend time with Neil and share our many common interests and experiences in not only our Hobby but also in our journeys through life. It turned out that Neil and I had many shared and common values. My son (who lives in Virginia, USA), and I will remember Neil as decent, honest person who possessed and always demonstrated a high level of integrity with those he touched.
