MCGRATH, Sister Rosaline, FCJ (Mary Joan)

Sr. Rosaline, beloved member of the Sisters Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ), passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2012 after a blessed 94 years of life.

She is survived by, and will be sadly missed by the members of her FCJ community and by many nieces and nephews and their families. Sr. Rosaline was born in Birkenhead, England on October 6, 1918. She enjoyed her school years with the Sisters FCJ and was very active in the sports teams. She entered the convent in Brussels, Belgium on February 2, 1938 and received her Teacher Training at Sedgley Park College in England. After teaching in primary schools in England, Sr. Rosaline came to Canada in 1956 arriving in Toronto where she was the first principal of St. Bernard’s School. She spent many wonderful years in ministry in leadership in her local FCJ community and as principal in various schools in the Separate School Board in Toronto before retiring in 1981. Sr. Rosaline was a deeply compassionate person as was evidenced in her dealings with the teachers, students, and their families. After retiring, she worked with Share Life Campaign in Toronto before going to Lethbridge in 1987 to serve in leadership for her community and in the ministry of visiting the sick and elderly. Sr. Rosaline then came to Calgary where she helped in the archives and was a joyful presence in the community. In her later years, her physical health declined but her spirits never faltered. Rosaline brought a great deal of laughter to her community and to family and friends with her wonderful sense of humor. She was always interested in others and in what was going on around her. She maintained her interest in sports and in the news of the world and her prayers were far reaching. Sr. Rosaline was predeceased by her parents John and Brigid (Grey) McGrath and by her five brothers and one sister.

  4. Anne and Anthony McGrath :

We are so sorry we can not make it over to Canada for Aunty Joan’s funeral. We have such fond memories of her visits when she came to the UK. We have one particular memory of her being “trapped” in our cloakroom with our collie dog on guard outside the door with Aunty Joan asking kindly for assistance. God Bless, you will be missed

  5. Margaret Silf :

I only knew Sr. Rosaline for two months, during an extended stay at the FCJ Centre which has just ended, but during that brief time I came to really love her. I have so many memories of her kindness, her sense of humour and her obvious interest in and concern for others. She left us while I was with the Sisters, and I thank God for this gift and privilege of knowing her. May she know the fullness of God’s love for all eternity. I would also like to express my sincere condolences to her remaining family in England, and to her loving FCJ sisters in Calgary. God bless, dear Rosaline, Goodnight, and sleep well.

  6. Dear Sister Rosaline,
You were the best principal I ever taught for at both St. Bernard’s and later at St. John’s. Remember when I’d pick you up at the convent to drive you to school in my wreck of a car. You couldn’t put anything on the floor in case it fell through the big hole!
My three girls all loved you as their principal too. You’ve earned your place in heaven…rejoice!

  7. Darlene Kingstone :

Sister Rosaline was my elementary school principal in Weston (Toronto) Ontario. She was a rare educator who left a lasting memory of all that is good and right with teaching students and guiding youth into adulthood and citizenship. She lead by kindness, fair ways and was guided by a gentle heart. Memories of how she supported me and redirected my ways will forever be appreciated.
