McGOWAN, Robert (Bob) Auld

April 26, 1932 – January 11, 2013

Bob McGowan of Calgary passed away on Friday January 11, 2013 at the age of 80 years.

Bob was born in Drumheller, Alberta, moving to Carbon when he was two and eventually his family relocated in Calgary when he was thirteen.

Bob attended Western Canada High School where his love of sports flourished. He ran “the mile” in City Track meets several years running, played football and basketball.

After graduation, Bob was hired by Calgary Power (TransAlta) where he worked for over forty years. He pitched ball for Calgary Power for twenty-five years in the Commercial “A” League. He also played in their curling league and five-pin bowling league where he bowled a 401 game. He won trophies for every sport he was involved in.

He was president of the Calgary Commercial Baseball League for ten years where he organized forty-eight teams. In his spare time, Bob took up Snooker, which he excelled in also.

Once Bob retired, he never slowed down. He joined the Senior Men’s Slo-Pitch League in Calgary in the summer and played on three different teams in Mesa, Arizona in the winter months, where he won a gold medal in the Arizona Senior games. To fill in his spare time, Bob became a terror in both eight-ball and Snooker.

Throughout Bob’s life, friends played a major role, spanning across Canada and the U.S., and he impacted every one of them. He was actually planning to take up golf when he was old enough, but his eye-sight wouldn’t allow it.

Bob is survived by his four sons, Scott (Sandie), Gregg, Darin and James; his brother John (Jack), Sister Sheila; six nieces and nephews; as well as great-nieces and nephews; and his wife Marilyn. Bob was predeceased by his parents John and Mary; brother Douglas and first wife Tina.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Eastside Memorial Chapel (5388 Memorial Drive N.E.) on Monday, January 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
