July 6, 1932 – September 19, 2013
Charles, beloved husband of Elizabeth McGilvery for 58 years, passed away with peace and tranquility dreaming of his days fishing along the riverbanks of Scotland. Charles passed on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the age of 81 years in Calgary, AB.
He was predeceased by his parents James and Jessie McGilvery, his sister Martha (Mattie), and is survived by his three sisters Annie, Ellen and Joyce. He is survived by his 9 children, Christine, James, Jessie, Jenny, Georgina, Alan, Charles, Michael and Colin. Two of his children are predeceased and lovingly remembered, Robert and Paul. Charles left behind his 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Always known to joke around right to the end he told the family the night before he passed away in sleep that “If I die, make sure that I am dead or I will never forgive you. In fact it would be a splendid idea if you got a second opinion to make sure!” Quick witted, honest and hardworking, Charlie left the coal mines and his home in Larkhall, Scotland with his wife, 4 children, £200 pounds in his pocket, and a dream. He loved the freedom and opportunities that Canada afforded to him and his growing family. Charlie was always well liked and respected by all of his peers and the student’s whose lives that he touched.
In true fashion, Charlie did not wish for a funeral but for the family to have a large get together and to celebrate life. He wishes all of his friends and family left behind love and happiness.
