McEACHERN, Frank Donald

November 5, 1929 – Bellevue, Alberta
August 29, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Frank McEachern, beloved husband of Outi McEachern of Calgary, “the love of his life”, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2014 at the age of 84 years.

Frank attended school in the Bellevue, Alberta area, with a post-high school year at Mount Royal College in Calgary, and graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1952. He worked in the petroleum industry as a professional engineer for several years in Alberta before moving to Toronto in 1970 as an oil and gas research analyst with Merrill Lynch. In 1980 he returned to Alberta and published the highly respected McEachern Oil Letter with subscribers across Canada, USA and Europe. He was a charter member of the Calgary Winter Club, and a member of the Calgary Finlandia Club and Nature Calgary. Frank and Outi had many wonderful trips across Canada and USA, as well as holidays to Mexico, Caribbean, Europe and Asia. They especially enjoyed time together at their cabin in the mountains. Frank enjoyed long walks, playing tennis, was an avid reader and a patron of the arts.

Besides his loving wife of 33 years, Frank is survived by his son Bruce McEachern (Wendy, expecting their first child) and daughters Leigh McEachern (Ken) and Ann McEachern (and her companion Rachel) all in the greater Toronto area; sister-in-law Kathryn Tulk (Doug) of Calgary and their children; as well as cousins in Edmonton and California. He is also survived by Outi’s three brothers in Finland, Heikki Makinen (Tuula), Eero Makinen (Anneli) and their children and Antti Makinen (Riitta) and their children, as well as many dear friends in Canada, USA and Europe. Special thanks to the staff of the McKenzie Towne Care Centre for their professional and compassionate care.

  5. Dear Outi,
I’m very sorry to hear about Frank’s passing. Though I haven’t worked at the Calgary Winter Club for many years, Frank was one of the members that left a lasting impression on me. He was a kind soul and I always looked forward to our conversations before and after his tennis games. I will keep you in my thought and prayers.

Our sincere condolences to you Outi on the the loss of your dear husband Frank. We have many happy memories of him—for example, when on the island of Leftgada in Greece, he and the rest of us spent many hours discussing how to address a range of world issues—or when over in Gestel, France, we all savoured the range of Bordeaux and Bourgogne wines, and once again we developed a range of ideas of how to address key world issues and policy. Our prayers our with you both. Carole-Lynne & Armel

  9. Hi Outi,
I was so sad to see Frank’s obituary the other day. He and I worked at Merril Lynch in the 70’s. I hope you remember me – I met you once or maybe twice. I was a friend of Kaylie Nepponen’s at the time and still have fond memories of her and you.

I have great memories of Frank and can easily confirm that you were the ‘love of his life’ as that is all he talked about. We all have a great loss.

    Alex

  12. Outi,
I just received the news about Frank after an email from Evie. It took me back to the wonderful years at the Holy Cross when I first met both of you. I remember the many times you opened your beautiful condo to host numerous functions and how Frank was always in the background of the ‘women’s parties’ cheering us on. You were a remarkable couple that were always so gracious and fun loving. You modelled what makes a relationship work; you were always the best of companions. I will be thinking of you as you go forward….you will always be looking back at the wonderful times you had together. Best wishes.
