McCAFFREY – Irene (nee Farynowski)

May 9, 1941– April 14, 2010

Irene McCaffrey beloved wife of Richard (Dick) McCaffrey of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Okotoks Country Hospice on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the age of 68 years.

Irene was born in Edmonton, AB on May 9, 1941, the first of two children of Walter and Jean Farynowski. Irene grew up in Warspite, AB moving to Edmonton as a young woman to study nursing. She graduated from the Edmonton General Hospital School of Nursing in 1962. After working in various hospitals in Alberta and the United States, she married her husband of forty-four years, Richard McCaffrey, in Edmonton on March 10, 1966. Together they enjoyed working throughout Alberta before settling in Calgary. In between raising their two children, Nicole and Lorin, Irene moved from active nursing into the field of occupational health and safety, completing post-graduate studies at Grant MacEwan College, and working in the field for twenty-five years, until her retirement in 2001.

Throughout her life, Irene maintained a natural curiosity and love of learning, cultivating a vast knowledge of holistic and alternative medicine. Her passions included light and sound teachings as it pertained to Mayan culture, and travelling. Irene spent her retirement years enjoying the things she loved best; spending time with her family, and travelling widely with her beloved husband, including wintering in their second home in Chapala, Mexico.

She will be missed by her husband Dick; daughter Nicole; son Lorin and his wife Jesma; mother Jean Farynowski; brother John Farynowski; her grandchildren; and many other friends and family.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at a later date in Edmonton. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Foothills Country Hospice Society, Box 274, Okotoks, AB T1S 1A5.

In living memory of Irene McCaffrey, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

  3. Vern and Arlene Friesen :

    Dick,Nicole and family,Lorin and Jesma,
We have some wonderful memories of Irene and the last ones being in Mexico with her in 2009. She was the only nursing classmate I kept in touch with and we shared some happy times such as camping in Radium and Banff in the 60’s, then with her being my bridesmaid in “65, nursing reunions and visits back and forth after that. We are glad she didn’t have to suffer too long and pray for peace and comfort for all the family at this trying time. Sorry we won’t make it out for the funeral but extend our warmest condolences to all. Love from Arlene and Vern

    Dick and family,
It is with deep sympathy and regret that we share in your loss of Irene. We are still in shock of the whole situation, and can hardly believe that she is gone. We do have happy memories, of her laugh, of her busyness, of her desire always to be helpful, and how nicely she interacted with others at Bird’s of Paradise. We grieve with you and for you. We did miss you both this year, and hope that when whatever normalcy is from here on happens, you will return to your friends at Birds.

  17. Jim and Lesley Bentein :

We know it’s difficult to emphasize the positives at a time like this, but it’s what Irene would have done. She would have talked about the strong marriage she had, the two great children she raised into adulthood, the love she had for her grandchildren and the marvellous travel experiences she had in her wonderful life. Irene was a very special person and we are so fortunate she came into our lives.

It seems she lived a full and wonderful, giving life – how very special she must have been. I know the void in ones heart to lose a mom and my heart and thoughts are with you at this time.

Dear Mr. McCaffrey, Nicole and Lorin,

I don’t know if you remember me but I used to babysit for you when you lived in Whitehorn. I was rather suprised to hear of Irene’s passing so early. Unfortunatly I know too well what you guys are going through as my mom Irene passed away too early as well on Jan.16/09 of Progressive Supra-Nuclear Palsy. I’ve thought of all of you often over the years and where you guys went. We actually live right beside your old house at #5217. I’d love to say Hi in person, my door is always open.

    Keri-Lynn
