It is with sadness to read in today’s (Jan. 3rd) Calgary Herald the passing of Harold McBain.
Harold will be sadly missed by all who knew him. His friendly and frank ways and warm
heart won many friendships and business associates alike. I’ve known the family over the
many years from the farming days at Camrose, and Harold was one of my brother’s best
friends and school chums. We will miss seeing Harold around Canmore.
Sincerely, Art and Elsie (Reid) Risdahl.

  3. Burna Purkin (formerly Olson) :

Harold was a very special man. He was so kind to me when I was in hospital after an operation and he and Marilyn visited me when I was at summer school in Eugene Oregon in 1991. He was a valued colleague of mine in the CBE and I admired the kind of loving husband he was to Marilyn.

Harold was a person of deep religious convictions and believed he and his precious Marilyn would reunite in heaven for eternity. May he rest in peace.

  6. I knew Harold through the CBE. Whenever we ran into each other we had such lovely conversations dotted with humour and sincerity. Although we didn’t see each other that often, each encounter was a gem of life. This summer we had a visit in Canmore where he was catering a wedding we attended. We had a great visit amidst the music, eating and dancing frenzy of the wedding event. He shared thoughts and feelings at that time and even offered me a job on his “team”! I will miss him and his smile and warmth. He was a truly lovely man!

  8. Dusty Rivoire :

    Mr. Mcbain Changed my life.

When I think back in my history and all of the teachers and administrators that have helped me along the way, there are always a few that shine brighter than the rest in my memory and Russel Mcbain was one of those great people. It didnt matter what the problem was, he would make our adolescent problems seem as trifling as they were and have us back in class with a new positive outlook on the way things were. I am and will be forever grateful to have met this man.

    Sincerely
    Dusty Rivoire

  9. I have been director of Deer Valley Meadows Camp since 2008. Whenever Harold met me at Church of God functions he would encourage me in the work of the camp. In the last few days, going through minutes of previous meetings, I have learned that Harold was the chairman of the camp council during the 1980’s and led the camp through some very difficult times. I wish I had thanked him for his involvement in making this a viable ministry today. Harold also blessed the ministers and their spouses with a marvelous feast in Canmore. We will miss him.
Our condolences are extended to his family and friends.

  10. Stephen Craig,Vice Chair, Attendance Bd :

On behalf of the Attendance Board, Alberta Education, I extend our most sincere condolences on the death of our friend and colleague. Harold was a current panel member, helping to deal with students who make unwise decisions regarding their educational opportunities. In this role as in the many other roles he performed, he exemplified compassion, concern, forthrightness, understanding and humour in dealing with students and families. He was admired for the grace and quiet acceptance of the death of his love, Marilyn and equally in the acceptance of the effects of the vehicle accident several years ago. Harold’s passing leaves the Attendance Board and members missing his humour, intellect and wisdom. Rest in peace, Harold, good and faithful servant.

  12. I had the honor of teaching with this gentle man at the very start of my teaching career and at the start of his too. Even then he was wise. I recall one day I was confiding I was in a bit of a bad mood and he said to me that it was OK because kids need to see that teachers are real people. He cared so much about kids, and about the people who help them. I have thought of his words for over 30 years. My condolences. He enriched our world.

Close your eyes and you can see that sweet smile. Harold encouraged everyone he met to be a better person and also to believe in themselves. He hosted so many wonderful weddings that I attended here in Canmore and took the wedding families in like they were his family. The food was always great but more importantly he brought everyone together. Just an amazing man who lived such a good life and loved his Marilyn so much. I miss you my friend.

Harold taught me, mentored me, nurtured me, and supported me throughout my junior high school years (1970-73) at Simon Fraser Jr. High. He was always there for me as my guidance counsellor, and was an honest and trustworthy man. Harold was easy going and easy to talk to.
