MAWER, Malcolm Frank

1948 – 2012

Malcolm Frank Mawer beloved husband of Renate Haessner-Mawer of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the age of 63 years at the Foothills Palliative Care Unit after valiantly battling cancer for eighteen months. At his passing he was surrounded by his family and his closest friends for the last few hours on this earth.

Malcolm was a most amazing man; honorable to a fault, generous, gregarious, embracing life with gusto and always thinking the best of everyone, wearing his heart on his sleeve. He was born in England and his family moved to Canada when he was eight years old. As a boy he was fascinated by rocks, so naturally he eventually became a geologist, spending a long and satisfying career with Petro Canada and other companies. As a second career he became a Realtor and he was one of the very best. For nearly twenty years in real estate he was a hundred percent committed to his clients who sought him out again and again, and introduced him to their families and friends. Malcolm was the ultimate dedicated family man, helping when and where he was needed and insisting on celebrating everyone’s successes and milestones in their lives. Malcolm will be greatly missed for his great sense of humor, his passion and drive for achievement, his trademark smile, his generosity and compassion. He loved spending time with family and friends over great food, good wine and conversation, loved parties, adored his daughter Heather and always tried to spend extra time with her. Last October, he was very proud to be able to walk her down the aisle on her wedding day and even dance with her without the help of a cane. Malcolm was grateful he got to spend almost three weeks with his son Anthony when he visited just before Malcolm had to go back to hospital. Next to good food and drink he enjoyed taking many memorable vacations with his wife, Renate of sixteen years, mostly to sunny southern spots where he was able to indulge in yet another passion, scuba diving.

Malcolm will be lovingly remembered by his wife Renate Haessner-Mawer; daughter Heather (Mark) Kanary; son Anthony in Ontario; brother Nicholas in Ontario; his cousins and their families in Canada: Hillary Carpenter in Vancouver and Howard Martin in Ontario; his cousins and their families in England: Julie and Roy Nuttley, Debbie and Paul Watkins. Malcolm was predeceased by his parents Joan and Frank Mawer to whom he was a wonderful and devoted son.

A Celebration of Malcolm’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Mustard Seed Street Ministry, 102 – 11 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2G 0X5 Telephone: (403) 269-1319,

  8. Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of Malcolm. I was actually on the funeral home’s webpage looking for the obituary for my friend’s announcement (Hai Michael Du, 36, who was killed on July 1st at Basil Restaurant). I was going through the announcements and Malcolm’s name jumped off the screen at me. I worked with Malcolm at Petro-Canada for a few years. It was a long time ago, but I do remember how much fun he made my job. He was the bright light in the department and always made my co-worker and I laugh every time he came to entice us to do his work first. I will always have very fond memories of Malcolm. It is very sad news indeed, that such a wonderful man has left us all. He will be missed very much.

It is with sadness and fond memories of Malcolm Mawer, that we send our condolences to Renate and family. We met Malcolm when we were going through an open house of his,a few years ago. We liked him right off the bat and decided if we were to ever move that we’d choose,Malcolm. To our surprise as we didn’t know Malcolm then, that he went above and beyond our need in selling our home. This was Malcolm. He was our friend as well as our “Realitor”! He will indeed be missed. Our prayers are to his wife Renate and family during this time. GOD Bless.

  11. Patrick and Jacqueline Brockerville :

We wanted to pass along our thoughts and prayers to Renata and family. We knew Malcolm in the capacity of a realtor and through his due diligence and professionalism he remained in contact with us through the years. He was of course the first person we thought of when selling my mother’s home and I was fortunate to meet with him a year ago and talk at length about our families. We shared the stories of each of us losing our parents and talked as friends, that was how we viewed Malcolm. We are very sorry for your loss and will remember him fondly. The Brockerville Family

  13. I was so sorry to hear of Malcolm’s passing. I only knew him for a very short time, he came highly recommended from a friend as a realtor. He was taking treatment at the same time as he was listing my home and I remember him helping me hang a picture-going above and beyond, he was weak and frail but still insisted on helping. He was so patient, kind and helpful and I am sad that he lost his hard fought battle with such a devastating disease. My deepest sympathy to Renate and family.
