MAUGHAN, Alice-Marie

May 16, 1930 – February 13, 2013

Loving Wife, Mother and Grandmother,

passed away Wednesday surrounded by family. Born in Lacombe, Alberta to Isaac and Frances Marie Irving, Alice-Marie was raised in Lethbridge, Alberta. There she met and married the love of her life, John (Jack) Bohan Maughan, who predeceased her in 2011.

Alice-Marie and Jack settled in Calgary where they lived happily for the rest of their lives. Married for fifty-nine years, they raised six children: JOHN (Elizabeth), Vincent and Jordan; BRETT, Seth; JULIA (Tim), Ben and Sam; PAULA (Lee), Max, Grace, Tilly and Nick; JOE (Janet); and MIKE (Maria), Sara-Ellyse. The family spent many happy times together at their vacation home at Lake Windermere, BC.

In addition to her amazing devotion to her family, Alice-Marie’s priority was her Roman Catholic faith. A long time member of Sacred Heart and St. Anthony’s Parishes, she served in the Catholic Women’s League. Alice-Marie also spent many happy hours volunteering with the Rotary Partners of the Rotary Club of South Calgary, including a term as President. She also served a term as President of the Samaritan Club and was a member of the Calgary Fine Arts Guild.

Alice-Marie had a playful nature and a delightful sense of humor. She leaves behind numerous friends who will sorely miss her on the badminton court, the golf course and at the bridge table.

Alice-Marie was predeceased by her brothers Rodney and Gordon, and by her sister Rosamund. She is survived by her brothers Tom, Bonar and Bruce, and by her sisters Juanita, Colleen and Paula.

There are no words to express how much we will miss our wonderful mother and grandmother.

Family and friends are invited to prayers and tributes at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 – 14th Street SW) on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222. www.albertacancer.ca/memorial. I was very sad to learn about the passing of your dear mother and grandmother. She was a beautiful lady, who for many years helped me in C.W.L. We will certainly miss her. However, according to our faith, she is now reunited with your Dad. She is free from pain and worry. She is another angel in heaven. My sincere condolences. My prayers will be with you during this time.
    Sincerely, Lea Cornelesen

  4. Patrice Taylor :

I would sometimes babysit a long time ago “at the Maughans”, which was only walking distance from my parents place, -Nick and Margaret Taylor- to get there, and a ride home from your dad. I don’t remember having to do that much, except announce “bedtime” after settling disputes as to what time “bedtime” was. I wish your mother godspeed, and for her children, my condolences and fond memories.

  5. Remembering Ami – with sincere condolences to the Maughan family-19/02/013
I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of knowing your parents for more than thirty years. We soon discovered that we had three commonalities – your father, John Maughan and Clarence Ettinger, my husband, were both born in Alberta in 1925 on August 25th. Your parents also married in the third week of June in 1953, as did Clarence Ettinger and I, and Ami’s May birthday and mine are just a day apart…But all has changed. As I contemplate the future-in a world without Jack and Ami- I acknowledge that Life is but a journey and inevitably that special journey ends. There will be no more sunrises, minutes, hours or days. Material things collected and treasured will pass to someone else. Fame, popularity and temporal power becomes irrelevant. Travel plans and to-do lists expire. It will no longer matter if one is known for physical beauty or superior intellect.
So what does matter at the end of life’s long journey?….How will the value of one’s life be measured?
That which matters most must surely be a composite of virtues. It is not the “stuff”that we’ve accquired in a life time, but, instead, the love and generosity of heart given freely, to family and friends as well as those in need.
Every act in Ami’s lifetime that displayed integrity, compassion and courage that enriched, empowered or encouraged others were Ami’s God given virtues, including that of a stalwart character.
Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not a matter of circumstance. It’s a lifestyle of choice.
I trust you will find comfort in the knowledge that your mother, Alice Marie Maughan chose to live a life that mattered …for which she will forever be remembered. – Pat “E”
