It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Sophie at the Beverly Centre, Lake Midnapore on October 18th, 2012 at the age of 96 years.
Sophie was born in Bankhead, Alberta and raised in Bellevue, Alberta, a small town in the Crowsnest Pass. She was married to Ailie Mattson for 59 years and raised two daughters, Shirley and Juane. Sophie was a loving mother and devoted wife. In 1964 she completed a career goal, graduating as a Nursing Assistant and spending several years nursing at the University Of Alberta Hospital and the W.W. Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. She was a life member (71 years) of the Bellevue Ladies Auxiliary Branch #19 and the Bellevue Ladies Softball Team who won the Southern Alberta Championship in 1944. Sophie’s unconditional love, unwavering support, strong work ethic, zest for life, quick wit and sense of humour will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
She will be dearly missed by her two daughters Shirley (Norman McLeod) of Medicine Hat, and Juane Priest of Calgary; four cherished grandchildren, Grant (Sherrie), Scott (Cindy), David (Angela) and Sandra Lynn (Arjay); eight great-grandchildren Jonathon, Jeffrey, Sandra, Amber, Michael, Allyse, Georgia and Leo; two great-great-grandchildren Makayla and Trevor; sister Elsie Ancelet and several nieces and nephews and their families.
Sophie was predeceased by her husband Ailie Mattson, parents Mary and Frank Mieranovicz, sisters Mary Mizera, Stella Gatto, Josephine Sefcik, grandson Ross McLeod and son-in-law Norman Priest.
A celebration of Sophie’s life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Sophie’s name can be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation or to the Bellevue Ladies Auxiliary Branch #19, Bellevue, Alberta. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff on the Shawnessy Unit at the Beverly Centre with special thanks to Dr. Brezski, Margaret, Angie, Dunia, Nuoi, Myra and Jene for their kind and compassionate care.
