Wilhelmina “Willy” Engeltje Mason passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the age of 87 years.
Willy was a generous, loving person who touched the lives of all who met her. She passed away with her children and family maintaining a bed side vigil, and succumbed to simple old age.
Bernie, her husband of sixty-four years passed away three years previously, and she leaves all three of her children, Larry Mason (Danna), Margaret Sorge (Bruce) and Ron Mason (Glenda), as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wilhelmina was predeceased by her parents Arie deWeerd and Maartje deWeerd) and her brother Cor deWeerd. She was a Dutch war bride that came to Canada to start her new life in the land of her husband. Together they struggled to make ends meet, but with a keen sense of financial prudence, they were able to build a new home and a new life. They opened a successful cross-county ski and hiking shop in Calgary, which also enabled them to embrace the outdoors, skiing and hiking all over Banff National Park. They also were able to return to Europe many times, exploring new places and making new friends. After Bernie passed away, she invited her children to Europe to let them meet relatives that had never been met, and to visit the ancestral home. Willy really had a great time on that last visit, and fondly looked at the photographs that were taken.
In her passing, a huge void has engulfed our hearts. She will be missed, and our memories of her will always be treasured, never to be forgotten.
