MARTIN, Theresa (Tess) Patricia

March 16, 1919 – Cochrane, AB
March 11, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Theresa Martin (nee Simpson) passed away peacefully at home, with loved ones by her side, on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

She was born in Cochrane, Alberta, the youngest of nine children, her father William having passed away before her birth. She loved the foothills, the Rocky Mountains and the beautiful sunsets of the area where her family had settled. When she was a teenager she moved to Calgary with her mother and sister Betty where she attended St. Mary’s High School. During this time she cared for her ailing mother who passed away while Theresa was still in her teens. She was always very proud of her contribution during World War ll during which time she worked at RCAF No.11 Equipment Depot. After the war she was courted by and married Bob (Robert) Martin with whom she shared a long loving relationship until his death in 1988. Theresa was totally committed to Bob and their 3 daughters and son for whom she had unconditional love and appreciation. Throughout her life Theresa was very spiritual and a devoted Roman Catholic, attending church regularly. She truly was a great role model in that she always looked for the good in everyone. She was a kind hearted woman who enjoyed being around people and encouraging them to do and be their best. Theresa had a wonderful fashion sense having worked at the Bay for many years. She always took great pride on her appearance and attire, which included a weekly coiffeur. She forged many long lasting friendships with the people she met at the 264 Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Theresa also loved travelling, visiting many countries and in later years focusing her travel on Hawaii and Las Vegas.

She is survived by her daughters, Heather Sallay and Carol Myers (Richard); son Greg Martin; three grandchildren, Nicky West (Adam), Karen Myers and Sean Myers (Chelsea Bartlett); and three great-grandchildren, Sara and Aiden West, and Hayden Myers-Kindt; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bob; her daughter, Patricia Mckibbon; and her grandson, Graham Myers; her parents, William Simpson and Mary Gillies; her six brothers, Jim, Don, Alex, Ed, Bill, Duncan; and her two sisters, Mary and Betty.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church (2424 – 24 Avenue N.W.) on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Please forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the medical charity of one’s choice.

In living memory of Theresa Martin, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Condolence Messages

  1. Morris Fisher :

Teresesa Martin was a kind loving and caring friend and will always have a place in my heart. God decided that the long journey through life on earth had been fulfilled with love and kindness to all she came in contact with and she was worthy of ever lasting life in her final home. No more pain and suffering she is now with the angles and her loving husband, Robert and all her family members and friends that went before her. We say goodbye to her with tears and joy knowing that she is at peace and has everlasting life. Farewell dear friend and my hope is to see you at life’s end. May her soul rest in peace and she be blessed by God with love, and happiness in everlasting life. May God bless her family and they find a ray of sunshine through their sorrow. ” In all ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”…proverbs 3:6

  4. Sasha Peters :

The best way to describe Tess was that she a true “lady” in every sense of the word. She always carried herself well and never said a bad word about anyone. She maintained her appearance with regular hair appointments, dressed fashionably, had her nails done and wore makeup . She even wore spike heels until a few years ago! The best thing about Tess was her sparkling personality which was reflected to everyone she met. She took interest in their stories, laughed all the time and totally enjoyed her social life right up to a month before her passing. What a great soul. Her family will miss her dearly as will all the friends she has known. It was a real pleasure knowing you Tess!

  5. Sheila Simpson Martin & Bob Martin :

Aunt Tess always got a kick out of the fact that we had both married men called Bob Martin. And she was such a good friend to her sister-in-law, my mom, Fay Simpson.

So many times, Tess flew out West for a family get-together (Thank you, Heather!) What a zest for life! And so much energy! She will indeed be missed.

  6. I remember Aunt Tess as a loving, kind and fun-loving aunt who always seemed to get the most out of life. She was always very kind to us Harris boys especially during all those years when we lived across the street. It was always a treat when Aunt Tess and Heather showed up. We knew we were in for a few laughs. She is the last of her generation in our family and marks the end of an era. She will be remembered with great fondness and love.

  9. Hugging you all. Tess was a very special lady who I am proud to say I knew, and had
many a toast with. She is an inspiration to me, however I can never be as well dressed and co-ordinated as her, but I hold her up as my model. How wonderful you were all able to be with her. I wish I could share a drink with you all in her memory. Rest assured Heather and I will manage a few in the future. She is with us always.
    Much love
    Jane (Welsh)
