Martin, Jeffrey Robert

Jeffrey Robert Martin, cherished son of Patricia Martin and Derek Martin, dear brother of Paul (Lisa) of Toronto, and Nancy and David passed away tragically at Mt. Athabasca while mountain climbing on Sunday, August 15, 2004. Jeff is also survived by his Grandmother Mary Gill of Newcastle, ON and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jeff was born in Calgary at the Holy Cross Hospital. He attended William Reid Elementary School, Elboya Junior High and Western Canada High School. He was an excellent student and participated in all aspects of school life. He was a very active Boy Scout and Venturer and developed a love for the outdoors. He spent many days in the mountains camping, hiking, climbing and exploring. In 1997 Jeff received the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. He attended UBC and achieved a degree in Engineering Physics in 2000. The next year he traveled to New Zealand by sailboat and explored Viet Nam and Nepal and feasted his eyes on Mount Everest. Returning to Calgary, he worked at Camp Chief Hector as a Counselor and also at Mount Norquay as a Ski Patroller, volunteering with abused women and children in his time off. In 2002 he enrolled at U of C to take pre-medical courses and worked in a research position in Biomechanical Engineering. He entered Medical School in 2003 and had recently decided on a career in Surgery. All the while Jeff continued to hike, climb, kayak, sail, run, sing, play the guitar, cycle, and bake pies. His most recent adventure was a two week sailing trip through the Gulf Islands in a thirteen foot sailboat.

Jeff was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was a thoughtful, talented, loving man, a patient teacher and he lived his life to the fullest everyday. An unfortunate accident has ended his life in the mountains that he loved. He will be in our thoughts and memories all of our lives.

Condolence Messages

  1. Debbie Jones :

    Dear Dr. Martin,
I was so very sorry to hear of your son’s tragic accident. I think you might remember me, had my son, Dustin through you. He is 34 now. You also wrote an article on myself about pre-eclampsia. I am so sorry you had to go through this difficult time. I always remember you fondly as you delivered my son, and talked often of your children. I especially remember you talking about Jeffrey. So sorry, please accept my very late condolences.
