MARTIN – John (Jack) William

February 1, 1923 – November 2, 2009

Born February 1, 1923 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and proud of it, Jack passed away in Calgary on Monday, November 2, 2009, peacefully in the arms of Lillian (nee Huband), his one true love and best friend for sixty-five years.

Besides his loving wife Lillian, Jack is also survived by his daughters, Janet (Jim), Karen (Tom) and Sheilah (Hersh); grandchildren, Andrea, Jody, Greg, Ashley, Rory, Sean, Shauna, Andrea Cori, Amanda, Eden, Glynnis, Shana, and Gavin; and fourteen great grandchildren. All grieve the loss of this greatly loved man. Never one to complain, Dad found only the best in us all.

With sisters, Mary, Nell and Gabe, and their families in St. John’s, we will all miss Jack’s sense of humour, love of family and quiet gentle patience.

Jack enlisted and served in the RCAF and graduated from McGill University after the war. He spent his working years in Montreal, retiring first to White Rock, BC for sea air, and later to Calgary to be near those he loved. He lived a full and loving life and battled Alzheimer’s and illness with his characteristic grace and tenacity. He touched the hearts of many and will be greatly missed.

A Private Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held at a later date. Forward condolences through The family is very grateful to the caring staff at CareWest Colonel Belcher and Foothills Hospital.

In living memory of Jack Martin, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.

  2. Jack was the happiest man I have ever met in my life. He and you, Lillian never failed to make me feel warm, and welcome in your home in Dollard des Ormeaux. I know my mom and dad really loved the two of you a lot, and mom never failed to tell me ‘all the news’ whenever she got a letter from you.
The world is a little bit chillier with his passing. I am proud to have known him.

    James Huband.

  3. Dear Mrs. Martin, Janet, Karen and Sheila:

We were all very sorry to hear about Mr. Martin passing away. We saw the obit and everyone thought it was very nice especially that there are so mnay grandchildren and great-grandchildren to remember him by. My father wanted to send the following prayer:

O Lord, support us all the day long until the shades lengthen and evening comes,

and the busy world is hushed

and the fever of life is over,

    and our work is done.

Then Lord, in thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last.

    All the best,

    Mary Hyde
