MARTEN, Helen Margaret Wise (nee Bensted)

December 10, 1919 – Calgary, AB
April 11, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Helen Marten of Calgary passed away ever so peacefully and with family by her side, on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the age of 94 years.

Helen is survived by her loving and devoted son Wayne Wise of Calgary; two grandchildren, Richard Wise and Robert (Lisa) Wise; two great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Jackson; and daughter-in-law Geri Gowdy. She is also survived by many caring nieces, nephews and extended family. Helen was predeceased by her husband Lawrence Marten and first-husband Owen Wise; daughter Laura Wise; brother Bill (Opal) Bensted; and sister Louise (Lawrence) Roppel; and Helen’s parents Thomas Bensted and Janet Bensted (Michie).

In 1919, Helen was born in Calgary, Alberta and grew up on the Bensted farm near Rockyford. In 1938, Helen graduated from Rockyford High School, then obtained her teaching certificate. She taught at Seiu Lake School north of Hussar, Serviceberry Creek at Ardenode, and then Glennan at Rockyford. Helen remembers walking to school and teaching eight grades at once. Helen taught school again at Severn Creek, Rosebud between 1967 and 1970. Helen married Owen Wise in 1942 and they lived on the Wise farm by the Rosebud River between the Stahlville Colony and the Springvale Colony. Helen thought the Hutterites were always very good neighbors and that it was nice to live beside a river. She shall always remember the beautiful bluebirds and wild tiger lilies that she saw in the valley. In 1949, Helen’s husband Owen passed away in an electrical accident on the farm and in 1952 their daughter Laura Jean died of tuberculosis meningitis. In 1958, Helen and Wayne moved to Calgary. Helen loved many things about life including watching the school children near her home in Rosedale, playing cards with Wayne, feeding the birds, talking over tea, playing bridge and smear, playing piano, gardening, farming, attending performances at the Jubilee Auditorium, volunteering with organizations like Meals on Wheels and being involved with the United Church. In 1982, Helen married a dear companion, Lawrence Marten and they enjoyed many years together. Most recently, she loved the time spent with her great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to her outstanding personal care givers Ria Alles and Joan Beaubien. Helen received fabulous care in the last three years of her life from the staff at Staywell Manor and Brentwood Care Centre.

  3. Ron Kenworthy :

Just caught the notice in this AM Herald. No time to get there, sorry. Mrs. Wise was my favorite teacher. She taught me in grade 3 in Rockyford Public. Of course, she was also a dear family friend having grown up a couple of miles from the Kenworthy’s. Helen always greeted me with a warm smile and thoughtful questions about myself and the family. I have thought of her often over the years, especially when I became a teacher just like she had. You are all in our hearts and thoughts today. Ron Kenworthy
