Marshall, George William

George Marshall beloved husband of Gladys of Calgary passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at the age of 77 years. George was born October 13, 1931 in Melfort, SK and was raised in Humboldt, SK. He moved to Biggar, SK in 1964, and married Gladys on August 23, 1966. There, he was an active Legion member and worked as a Locomotive Engineer for CNR until his retirement in 1989. For the next 16 years Gladys and George travelled extensively around North America in their RV, spending most winters in Mesa, AZ. They enjoyed making many close friends during these travels and George could often be found in their trailer reading a Louis L’Amour or other western novel, a cup of coffee and conversation ready for whoever might drop by. While in Mesa George found an outlet for his creativity in many crafts, which found their way into the homes of friends and family. While he was able he also enjoyed square dancing. In 2005 George and Gladys moved to Calgary to be closer to their son and his family. Despite his struggle with COPD George took great interest in his granddaughters and their activities, especially their accomplishments on the violin. His family was a great source of pride and joy for him, and he remained close to his sisters and their families throughout his life. He will be remembered with affection by many for his good natured teasing, humour and generosity of spirit. Besides his loving wife Gladys, George is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Alexandra; and his granddaughters, Lauren and Natalie. He is also survived by sisters Ruth (Jake) Bergen, Mary Ann (Jack) Anderson, and Janet (Dale) Blair; sister-in-law Vivian Walden, and several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his parents James and Ada Marshall; brothers-in-law, Gerald Green and Carl Walden.
