MARIKA, Carol Joan Irene (nee Strashok)

April 3, 1944 – April 14, 2012

Carol Joan Irene Marika beloved wife of William (Bill) of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital with her family at her side on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the age of 68 years.

Carol was born, raised and was married to Bill in Edmonton. They with their two children moved to Calgary in 1971 which became their home ever since. As a parent and grandparent, Carol’s greatest love was that of young children and as a result she volunteered as a “cuddler” in the maternity ward at the Rockyview for many years until she had her own grandchildren.

Carol had a great affinity for the wonders of water, starting with her childhood days at the family cabin at Pigeon Lake and continued with their recent vacation home at Vancouver Island. Even her vacations with Bill during their retirement years always seemed to be in the proximity of water.

Carol will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, friendly outgoing personality, and welcoming approach to whomever she met.

Carol leaves to mourn her husband William; children, Curtis Dickie, Pamela Marika and James Marika; two beautiful and loved grandchildren Evan and Aimee Hay; and her brother Raymond Strashok; along with two nieces and three nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Merian and Amelia Strashok and brother Ted.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

Condolence Messages

  1. Allison Shelstad :

Bill, Pam, Jim, Evan & Aimee,

Words can’t express how sorry I am to hear of Carol’s passing. I thought she was the sweetest thing and I enjoyed our chats, recipe swaps and compliments on each other’s shoes (which was incredibly kind of her because I think i wore tevas and hiking boots at that time). I loved laughing with her and just really enjoyed her company – I hadn’t seen her for a long time but she was one of those friends that you would run into and just instantly re-connect. Every time I saw her I always went in for the big warm hug.

She will be incredibly missed and my heart goes out to all of you.

  4. Karen Rowswell :

I am very sorry to hear of Carol’s death. I remember her as a sunny and cheerful person from our time as childhood neighbours at Pigeon Lake. I was a few years younger and she treated me kindly in that older-sisterly way that good-natured children do. I thought she was wonderful.

We are so saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved Carol, a devoted friend, wife, mother and grandmother. We now live in Ontario but one of my fondest memories of Calgary was my friend and neighbour Carol, lunches and a lot of laughs, she was the best. Our thoughts are now with Bill and family at this very sad time,
