Mansur Suri Bhatia, a.k.a HURRY CALL SURI

July 14 1932 – Oct 6 2010

With great sadness, we announce that Suri passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday October 6th. He is survived by his devoted and caring wife of 53 years Fatima (Gulshan) Bhatia, his son Amin Bhatia, (Danielle) his daughter Aneesa Howell (Ben) and grandchildren Angela, Kelsey and Nathan. He is predeceased by his daughter Neemet Nina Bhatia who passed away in 1989.

Suri was so many things in his life: He was a scoutmaster, engineer, realtor, community leader, Rotarian, devoted husband, brother, father and grandfather. He studied and attained professional engineer status at London University (UK) to then return to his birthplace of Kampala Uganda, but upon political turmoil he sacrificed everything, even risking his life to bring his family to this country in 1971.
Suri then attained new success by switching to real estate and became famously known in Calgary by his slogan of “Hurry Call Suri”. Friends and clients can remember his ads that featured a cartoon of him on a flying carpet circling the Calgary tower. He was also a proud volunteer for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics as well as Rotary International. His passion for life, music, and nature coupled with his humour and enthusiasm was infectious to all who knew him.

Funeral Services will be held at the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Centre, 4531 Manitoba Road SE, on Saturday October 9th at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Rotary Foundation (Canada). The family wishes to extend a special thanks to all the caregivers, volunteers, nurses and doctors at Carewest: George Boyack.

Suri leaves behind hundreds of friends all over the world who miss him dearly. The best way we can honour him is to continue his enthusiasm, integrity, passion and love of Canada.Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Mansur Bhatia, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.

  2. Dear Aneesa and family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Your father was a pillar in our community and his legacy will continue to live on through your commitment to friends, family and community. He sounded like an amazing man who had a great sense of humor, love and compassion. They say it is not the years in your life but the life in your years and it sounded like your dad lived his life to the fullest.

    Much love,

    Anne Daniel

  5. Jan from Riverbend :

Tina, I was sad to hear about Suri’s passing. I just wanted you to know that I have always remembered his laughter and smiling face – a positive role model that i carry throughout my days. He was always able to make a quiet group of people feel comfortable and enjoy their life more. I can remember gathering with other community families out in the freezing park while he was organizing the group for caroling – or the many times that he cheered the crowd on at the annual pancake breakfasts. And the pride that he shared with us when he worked out the plans for our flag poles at the community center. Suri was a big part of wherever he was. I’m glad that I had a chance to be in a small part of his life.
Tina – surround yourself with family and all of the great memories. Hugs to you.
Jan – now on the Sunshine Coast BC

Suri was like a ray of sunshine and a positive influence to all of us who arrived to settle in Canada from East Africa in the early 70’s with our young families.

He will be sorely missed and remembered for his zest for life, his humour and his integrity as a professional. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Ameen.

  10. I remember early in my real estate career losing a listing to Suri. Suri called my up and said he saw and liked my presentation, but he had “won” the listing. I said well Suri, at least now I am losing to a higher caliber of realtor” He always had the ability to make people smile. He will be missed.

  11. What a wonderful man. So positive and upbeat. I was always amazed at how he was able to keep that attitude during the difficult times in the real estate business. It was a rare quality and it helped keep my attitude where it should be. I’m sure your family is proud of the kind of man Suri was.

Suri was a wonderful man. I would go out of my way to see and talk to him when he had a property he was marketing. I often think of him and his love for life and others. God bless his family and may He comfort you as Suri will be such a large loss in your lives.

  13. Derek DuBoyce :

Very early in my Real estate career, some 30 yrs ago, I was fortunate to meet Suri. Suri’s kindness & honesty to both his clients and fellow Realtors, served as a role model for many. “Hurry call Suri” served as more than a creative self promotion. Those in the industry who knew him, were happy to “hurry” to show his listings and to work with him to close a transaction that made every one happy.
Suri, I will not say goodbye, only that I will keep an eye open for your next listing, and thank you for being. To your family I wish comfort, from the knowledge that you have been such a positive influence on so many. Until we meet again. Derek DuBoyce

  14. I am so sorry that I didn’t learn of Suri’s passing until today. He had a wonderful zest and joy for life and was always so much fun to be around. My ex-wife and I were Suri’s first customers when he got in to the real estate business. Our initial offer on a listing in Oakridge was so bad that the seller who was a large man and weighed about 280 lbs upon being presented with the offer by Suri ripped up the contract and threw it back in Suri’s face. Suri returned to us in a very shaken condition but as usual with his charm, skill and persistence he closed his first sale. These were personality traits he carried with him throughout his life. We always remember Suri and his “sexy brown broad” as he affectionately called Tina. We are so sorry to hear of Suri’s passing and send along our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family
