MANNS – Susan Edith (nee Scrase)

September 30, 1940 – November 27, 2009

Manns, Susan Edith (nee Scrase) died in the early hours of November 27, 2009 surrounded by her family and the wonderful staff at the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane, AB.

Susan was born on September 30th, 1940 to Frank and Mary Scrase in Sherridon, Manitoba. She grew up with her younger sister Frances in the northern mining town of Lynn Lake, Manitoba and graduated with a Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba. On June 8th, 1963 she married John (Jack) Manns and together they lived in California, England and Colorado though they spent most of their working years in Saskatoon. More recently, they spent their retirement years in Alberta where they were close to their children and grandchildren. They have three children: Patricia, Derek (Jennifer), and Braden (Alison) and six grandchildren including Ethan, Liam, Daegan, Jade, Bryn and Kate. Family was an important part of Susan’s life and her children and grandchildren were a constant source of joy. We trust that she is now free to watch her grandchildren play football, hockey, dance and act as they make their way through life’s journey.

Susan loved her time in Saskatoon. She cherished her many friends on Leddy Crescent, Riverside Golf course and St. Paul’s United Church. She was always active and enjoyed golfing, curling, cooking, gardening and quilting. We are left with many quilts and recipes that will remind us of her. As her children grew up Susan went back to work at an accounting firm and remained active at St Paul’s United Church where she chaired the board for three years.

As anyone who knew Susan was aware, she was an extremely easy person to get along with; she had a beautiful smile and not a bad word for anyone. If you couldn’t get along with Susan, there was something wrong with you! Many of the caregivers at Bethany have commented how she would light up their day with her warm smile and easy laugh.

She celebrated her 40th wedding anniversary with her loving husband in 2003 and though she would have been eager to continue many more adventures with Jack, sadly, this was not to be. Susan lived since February 2006 in the Bethany Care Centre. We are very grateful for all the love and caring they provided and for the way they cared for all of us in her last days. Rest well Susan; you lived well, laughed often and loved much. We will not forget you.

There will be two memorial services. First, a small service on Friday December 4th, for relatives and members of her Bethany family at the Bethany Care Centre Chapel in Cochrane.A Memorial Service will be held at Hillhurst United Church (1227 Kensington Close N.W.) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Bethany Care Foundation.

In living memory of Susan Manns, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.

    Dear Jack & family,
We send our sympathy to all of you.
When we think of Susan, it is as our
great neighbor!! She was the one who
welcomed us to the neighborhood & rural
living. I know she extended support
to neighbors, but also to the school and
church, to her business clients, and yet
did all for her family. Bruce and I
remember fondly all the business and social times we shared, and we think
    especially of her family.
    With caring, June and Bruce

  17. Clare & Vangy Heagy :

We were so sorry to hear of Susan’s death. We heard of her illness from Bruce & June Schnell a few years ago, and found that very sad.
Susan was so highly regarded by everyone in our office, and by clients as well. She brought a very bright and mature presence into the office, and was always such a delightful person. She was considered a good friend by each of us. Your loss is very great.

One of the great blessings which the Lord bestowed on all of us is our ability to recall the past at will. As you “treasure the memories” of the many loving times you have shared with her, we know that you will be ever thankful for her. May those memories enrich your lives and ease the distress that each of you feel.

May the God of all comfort surround each of you in the coming days. We are praying for all of you.

  19. Dear Jack & family, My sincere thoughts of sorrow are with you all. I have fond memories of the special events celebrated at your home in Saskatoon — many times. Sue was an endearing person and made us all feel very welcome. Those were happier times. You will miss her terribly, as I do Roly, but we must believe they are in a joyful place all singing in unison.
    Sincerely, Julie Muir
