Malthouse, John Herbert Frank

Jack Malthouse of Calgary passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2009 a week short of his 98th birthday. Jack was born in Calgary on July 9, 1911 to Ada and Ernest Malthouse who had recently immigrated to Canada from Sussex, England. As a teenager, after the Great War, he moved with his family to the soldier settlement of Camp Lister south of Creston, B.C. There, along with other soldier families, they cleared the forest and pioneered farming in this area. Jack returned to Calgary in the early years of the Depression where he met Mary Mellor. In 1939 Jack joined the Canadian Army (RCOC) and married Mary. He served with the Army in North West Europe from 1941 to 1945. Upon his return home to Canada, he continued to serve in the Army until his retirement as a Staff Sergeant in 1961. Jack held several different positions in the Federal Civil Service finally retiring in 1975. Jack’s family always came first and foremost and his activities centred around them. He loved curling, camping, hiking, fishing, skiing and the great outdoors. He will always be remembered by his son Gary (Linda); his daughter Sherry (Floyd); his grandson David (Stephanie); his granddaughter Krista (Dan) and his great grandsons Mark, Luc and Ian. Jack was predeceased by his father Ernest, his mother Ada, his sister Francis, his brother Charles, his grandson Ashley and his beloved wife of 69 years, Mary. A Memorial Service for Jack will be held at a later date.
