MAKWANA, Deborah Sharon (nee Gavel)

February 2, 1953 – Edmonton, Alberta
January 8, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Debbie Makwana on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at the age of 61 years.

Debbie was a kind, compassionate, tender-hearted woman. She enjoyed the simpler things, including a hot cup of chai, watching the food network and listening to Motown. Debbie loved to read and adored road trips, especially through the mountains. She loved the smell of rain and fresh-cut grass. What made Debbie happiest was seeing her kids Stefan and Megan happy with families of their own. She had six grandkids who adored her and we are sure she will watch over them.

Debbie is survived by her children Stefan Makwana (Crystal) and Megan Furgeson (Cameron); six grandkids Seth, Addison, Sawyer, Milo, Libby, and Wynn; and sisters Judy Turnbull and Denise Holmberg. She was predeceased by her parents Bruce and Delma Gavel.

A Private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Debbie Makwana, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Eastside, 5388 MEMORIAL DRIVE N.E., Calgary, AB Telephone: 403-248-8585.

  4. I had the absolute pleasure to work with Debbie at Star Choice call centre. In time, I moved on to other opportunities but whenever I think back to my days at Star Choice, she was one of the people that I remember most. From the first day I stepped out of my training class to the last day I worked there, she always had a smile on her face and she made sure to say hi to me everyday I saw her, even when we did not work in the same department anymore. I know there are many other people that felt the same way.

May your rest in peace Debbie and my condolences to your family. They were very lucky to have you in their lives. I will say a little prayer for you today.

  5. I am very sad to hear of the passing of my dear friend Debbie. I met her many many years ago selling my Avon door to door. We developed a great friendship and imagine my surprise when I came to work at Star Choice and there she was. I had the pleasure of working with her in the Outbound Sales Dept. until she moved on to another Dept. within the organization. There was not a day that went by , that she did not make me laugh. You will be sadly missed my dear friend, but I know you are making them all laugh up there in Heaven. My deepest sympathy to the family she leaves behind and I’m sure they will carry on her legacy. RIP Debbie.

  7. Peter and Judy Beyeler :

Fifty years of history are flashing through my mind since I spoke with Megan. Deb was always there through every life experience from the mundane to the major. Always ready for a good laugh or cry. She filled our last few years of conversation with stories of her children and grandchildren. She was so proud of them. To Judy and Denny, you were always her best friends with the bonus of being sisters. My heart and thoughts go out to you all. I believe that Deb’s spirit will always surround you and hold you near. Hopefully in time you will receive comfort in that thought and the memories that were created with my friend Deb.

    My love to you all,

  8. Please accept my condolences on the recent passing of your mom.
You will miss her everyday for the rest of your life. Your memories will not always be sad, you will remember fun times you had together and often you will find yourself doing things and remember it is because she taught you to do them in that manner. Debbie was rigid in her beliefs and showed you her love in the best way she knew how. Keep her smile alive in your memory and she will always be there to guide you. Love you babe take care both you and Stephan.
