MAHON – Howard Anthony

September 8, 1940 – July 18, 2011

Howard Anthony Mahon beloved husband of Janine of Calgary, died after a short, fierce battle with cancer on Monday, July 18, 2011 at the age of 70 years.

Howard was a thoughtful guy with a big laugh who loved his family, his land, and working with his hands. He made time to learn from everybody he met, and to give them the respect they deserved. Past students and colleagues at Alberta Vocational Centre in Calgary will remember him as a friendly guide through the mysteries of mathematics.

Friends and fellow vendors at the Millarville Farmers’ Market knew him for the past twenty years as a skilled wood carver whose pieces produced from felled trees, as well as personal, carefully researched west-coast-style ceremonial masks crafted with curved knives, possessed a finely observed liveliness. His carvings have found homes on at least three continents. His masks watch over the workshops where he was happiest.

Howard will be deeply missed by his best friend and partner of thirty years, Janine; brothers Rick (Flo) of Lethbridge and Hugh of Edmonton; children Dan (Brenda) and their daughters Raelene and Niki of Grande Prairie, Toni (James) and their daughters Kya, Keltie and True of Calgary, and Michael of Calgary.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Foothills Country Hospice Society, P.O. Box 274, Okotoks, AB, Telephone: (403) 995-4673, www.countryhospice.org. Thanks to Dr. Ana-Maria Oelschig and all of the staff and volunteers at the Foothills Country Hospice in Okotoks, for their skill, understanding, true caring, and many kindnesses.

In living memory of Howard Mahon, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

  2. Honour and I were shocked and saddened to learn of Howard’s sudden passing. He was much too young! Howard was my mentor, colleague and more significantly, a friend. My memories go back to 1969 when we moved to Calgary to start my new job at AVC. I remember Howard’s helpfulness and a friendship so easily offered. He was my leader and role model in those wonderful exciting days when AVC was just getting started. He was highly respected by his students and faculty as a true professional and a humane individual who always made time to help anyone who needed it. He did this with great humour, respect and caring. Honour and I will miss seeing Howard at the Millarville market and catching up on what has been happening.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Janine, during this terribly sad time. Please accept our condolences to you and the family.

  5. Janine,
We haven’t talked since you were the heart and soul of the Graphics dept at AVC.
I knew Howard as a very special teacher at AVC, the teacher that would somehow get students through the Math courses. I was sad when he left the College for his vision was special. However, I understand that he had a rich life “afterAVC”.

    My condolences,

    –rob

This is not a condolence but a story about Howard. I worked with Howard at The Alberta Vocational Centre in Calgary. I was his office partner.
A good story about Howard involved a camera. Howard was using the AVC expensive camera and being the trusting soul he was, he just left it on his desk. I came along and thought it should be out of sight and put it in his filing cabinet and thought no more about it and did not see Howard to mention that it was in the cabinet. Monday morning arrived with the AVC brass, the AVC security and the police on the scene. He relayed all his problems to me. I then opened the cabinet and gave him the camera. Howard, being the man of steel never did reveal who put the camera in the cabinet.

Janine, our thoughts and our hearts are with you always. Sending our love as we share this difficult time.

    As ever,

When I started working at AVC, Howard was one of the friendly faces – an individual who always offered an encouraging word. His laugher was a joy to hear and his caring and concern for his students a true inspiration. He was always able to brighten one’s day. He never lost track of the fact that the students were what really mattered and their success was a great legacy for him. You and and the rest of the family are in my thoughts, Janine.

With sincerest sympathy and condolences. I have many fond memoires of Howard from my early days at AVC. He was a great colleague – always fun, entertaining and very committed to his students – always willing to give them the time and help that they needed. And his math videos were one of the most helpful and most-used A-V supports for students. He will be missed by many.

  13. Dear Janine and all the members of Howard’s family,
Howard was a good teacher. He had a way of delivering math concepts so that even “math-proof” students could understand. When he moved on to creating his art, I would often see his work at Millarville and other markets. It was so interesting to see both math and art talent in one person. Janine and all – you are in my thouughts.

    Dear Janine,
Deb and I were so sorry to hear about Howard, he was one of the reasons we would go to the market in Millerville, just to say Hi! I worked with him, and you, back in 1982 until he left and he was a joy and an inspiration. We often spoke about how to help the students as a team, him in class and me in counselling. His caring was warm and genuine, always a friendly face.

Dear Janine, I am so sorry to hear about Howard’s passing. I was very fortunate to work with both of you here at BVC. It seems like a short time ago he was teaching with us here at BVC because I would still see him often at Millarville market and, of course, I recommended his math videos to others for many years. Janine all the best in these difficult times and my thoughts are with you.

    Dear Janine,

We were so very sorry to hear about Howard. We have many fond memories of him, including one freezing weekend skiing at Panorama many years ago! We loved his sense of humor and his gentle, quiet ways. Every time we see one of his bears, we’ll think of him. Sorry we can’t be there today, but we will be thinking of you. When the time feels right, we’d like to get together.

I have such wonderful memories of Howard from the time when I started working at AVC. He was so warm and friendly, and I enjoyed our conversations very much. He was a great friend and he helped me develop my skills as a teacher. I was a lucky recipient of a set of his math books. He will be missed.

    Dear Janine and family,

It is with great sadness that I heard of Howard’s passing after a courageous battle with cancer. He was such a gentle and kind man and he always took a genuine interest in those he met and worked with. He was a great math teacher and got his students involved with the subject and understood their difficulties with it. I am sorry to have missed his memorial service as I am living in Victoria BC.

Janine, I will miss Howard’s meet and greet at the Bragg Creek Christmas fair the most. He was front and centre to make sure I had a basket, a smile, and that I knew where your booth was located. I had my last hug from Howard at that fair. In my mind, he will always be standing there. I feel your loss.
