MAHLBERG – Ronald Wayne

March 28, 1952 – January 15, 2010

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ron, on Friday, January 15, 2010 with his beloved life partner Elaine, daughter Jessica, mother Lorraine and brother Dave at his side.

Ron battled cancer for seven years with the same grace, courage, dignity and humour with which he approached most things in life. Ron was born in Watson, Sask., March 28, 1952 and grew up in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Calgary. He graduated with a B.A. from U of C and received his law degree from U of A in 1983. Ron was a well-respected lawyer who never turned away a client without means. He was as well known and sincerely liked by people living on the streets of downtown as he was by judges, lawyers and prosecutors he worked with everyday. In spite of his professional skills and successes everyone close to Ron knew he would still rather be golfing or fishing.

Most precious of all to Ron was the love of his life and partner of thirty years, Elaine O’Hara; his beloved daughter Jessica Mahlberg, of whom he was immensely proud; and his dearly loved mother Lorraine Brown. Ron will also be deeply missed by his niece Skylah Hicks; granddaughter Elysse Landry; son-in-law Dorian Landry; sisters-in-law Maureen O’Hara and Cathy King; dear friend Daryl Harrison; nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, in-laws and friends.

A Celebration of Ron’s life will be held at The Silver Springs Community Centre (5720 Silver Ridge Drive N.W.), on Sunday, January 24, 2010 from 3:00 to 6:00p.m. You may forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Mustard Seed Street Ministry, 102 – 11 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2G 0X5 Telephone: (403) 269-1319, www.theseed.ca.

In living memory of Ronald Mahlberg, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

  3. MARNA K. MAIN (OLD AUNTIE) :

If we are very lucky in our earthly lives, we get to share the journey with a friend we love. When I think of Ron I hear Elaine’s laughter. When I think of Ron I remember his closeness to Elaine’s Dad Larry (Mo) and to her Mother, Amy, my sister..and the many times they relied on Ron’s values and good sense, his sense of humor and his friendship. When I recall our last phone conversation just after Christmas,
I can hear the pride in his voice as he
spoke of Jess and Elysse, and ‘grandma’
Elaine.. When I enquired after Dorian Ron went on about the Landry Family and the shared Christmas, and the excited Skylah, and about how comforted and pleased he was to know that his family had the support of Dorian’s…. ‘a Good
Guy,’ ‘a really good guy’.. Whenever I had seen Ron in the past it was always at family things, no chance to talk, I was pleased to hear him speak of his family in his soft conversation, humor injected and sincere. Ron…
May you enjoy the embrace of the loved ones who wait..over the rainbow. Thinking of you and yours Elaine,
    Love, Aunt Marna

I was very sorry to hear of Ron’s passing. I knew him professionally – I was a year behind him in law school, had files with him and saw him from time to time in court. I have to say that I always enjoyed dealing with him – whether it was work related or just to chat as we passed on the street. I’m sure he will be missed.

  19. Elaine & Tara, please accept my sympathy for your great loss. I have a bad cold or Melvin and I would have been there today. I enjoyed Ron’s company at work, he was well liked by everyone, had a wonderful sense of humour and was always willing to help out(especially when we couldn’t fix our office machines). I will always remember the good times we all had at the office dinners and how Ron always had us laughing. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  22. I had the unique distinction of knowing Ron in 2 separate manners, as Elaine’s cousin and as a fellow lawyer. I probably saw him more than anyone else would have imagined both in the court house – though usually wandering in the area of the courthouse – and at family gatherings. I liked Ron. I will miss him. I admired his joie de vivre, his reperoire of jokes and his patience with life. I will miss him.

  23. I was very sad to hear of Ron’s passing. I met him when we lived in Parkdale going to grade 8 and 9 at QEJHS, but lost touch when my family left town. Years later, our paths crossed again when we both had become lawyers. The little guy with the quick quip had grown into a true gentleman, in every sense of the word, but had lost none of the sense of humour that distinguished him as a kid. Nothing meant more to him than his family and friends, and doing his all for them. My condolences and hopes that he’s breaking par somewhere, with a big grin on his face.
