  5. David Steckenreiter :

It is with a great deal of sadness that I write this note from thousands of miles away. I did not personally know Hugh’s family except for Gwen and Robin, although he spoke endlessly to me about them. Hugh and I had a connection. The time we were friends was far too short but somehow his friendship will always remain with me. Hugh, probably was one of the most knowledgeable musicians that I ever knew in my career that spanned 40 years. He was humble and most people would not have known that deep within was an immense repository of knowledge and experience. Hugh also loved the King’s Own and the Regiment. I am not certain if the Regiment has a full comprehension of his dedication. He was the old guard where the Regiment was family, where its history and its tradition needed to be understood and passed on. Rudyard Kipling wrote that the band was the soul of the Regiment. It was the band that was to carry forward and preserve the traditions. This was not a part time gig for Hugh. This was a deep personal commitment and love for the Regiment. When we use to meet on Fridays for lunch we often spoke about the end. Even 5 years ago Hugh was ready and had resolved his personal issues. When we last spoke and he knew the end was imminent he told me that he could not have asked for a better life. He did what he wanted in life. He had a loving wife and great friends. Who could have asked for more. God Bless you my friend !

  6. Gwen & Family,

I felt very sad to learn Hugh had passed away. He taught me trombone back in the mid sixties when he was in the Army Band and lived in south west Calgary. ( Jock Flynn’s old house) I was in high school.

Hugh influenced me to the point of making music my dominant career. We used to play shows and gigs together. I have the utmost respect for Hugh, as a musician, and as a human being. He will be missed by many.

    My utmost condolences, GREG DIGNEY

With Sympathy to Gwen and Hugh’s family. I was a member of the KOCR band when Hugh took over as conductor back in the 80s and I am still in the band. I have very fond memories of all the time we spent together in the band. Hugh was a special person who influenced many of us who had the chance to play with him. He watch me grow from being a teenager to getting married and having kids. He always watched out for us and stood up for us. He took pride in all he did and coached us to feel the music and try to play not just the notes but to express how the music should sound and to always keep our audience in mind. Hugh was a man of integrity. He was fairly private but when he spoke of his family it was with great love and respect. he shared some funny stories about the ducks and coyotes out at Dalemead. He had the courage and fortitude and knowledge to do events like the Queen;s visit at McMahon stadium, the Dieppe tour, and the Lethbridge tatoo. He stood out in the freezing rain for the dedication of Harvey barracks and many other challenging events but always encouraged us to be proud of our regiment and do the best job. I will miss him and I am very glad and proud to have known and served with him.

  10. Brian Brennan :

I just found out yesterday about Hugh’s passing and am shocked and saddened. He was way too young. We had a many musical good times together, on the road with the Felix Possak Band. As well as being an accomplished musician, Hugh was a very talented comedian. I will miss his bonhomie, his laughter and his good humour. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

  11. It was only today that I learned of Hugh’s passing. Felix Possak was kind enough to let me know.

Though I left Calgary years ago, my memories of its musical community are many and fond. Hugh was one of the anchors of that community and his leadership, example, friendship (and let’s not forget that sense of humor!!!) have remained a strong example in my life.

Gwen, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

  12. Just learned of Hugh’s passing. My belated condolences go out to the family. I served with Hugh in the Lord Strathcona’s Regimental band in Calgary in the late ’50’s. I was a young musician and Hugh always had time to mentor those of us who needed it. He was a fine musician and man.

Hugh was a great friend and mentor during the many years that I knew him. I had the pleasure of both performing with him in many bands, and under his baton as a member of the K. O. C. R. band.
