September 1, 1946 – Calgary, Alberta
December 11, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Ruth MacLaughlin of Calgary passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the age of 68 years.

Ruth was a vibrant person, full of fun, love, and laughter.
She was always the mother who went on all the rides at Stampede with the kids, bought ice cream on hot summers days and made sure all the kids had Halloween costumes. Neighbours and friends always felt welcome and there was always coffee in the pot.

Ruth was an amazing baker, and enjoyed baking everyone’s favorite treats. At school bake sales, teachers and parents alike would pull her daughter aside to ask what Ruth had baked, and it always sold out first. When her daughter was a teenager working at Calgary Pick Your Part, Ruth often brought in cookies for the staff. She made numerous wedding cakes for her family and friends and later made cakes for her children and their friends’ weddings.

Ruth will be remembered as a beautiful, tough, athletic girl, who ran off to Nova Scotia to join the Navy and then marry a handsome sailor, with whom she spent a lifetime. When her daughter Bonnie was young, Ruth had a day home, and later took a job as a clerk at the Met.

Ruth’s other daughter Debbie moved in when she was 15 years old and quickly became family. Ruth was thrilled to have someone in the family who loved Christmas decorations as much as she did.

Despite having a degenerative neurological condition that slowly robbed her of her ability to walk, talk, hold a spoon or do the basics in her last few years she did her best to enjoy life anyway she could. While living in Vancouver, she enjoyed time with her granddaughters at Science World, the mall or Granville Island. She, along with her daughter Bonnie and family returned to Calgary this past fall in order to be close to family and friends. While Ruth enjoyed living in Nanaimo and Vancouver, she always considered Calgary to be home.

Ruth is survived by two daughters Bonnie (Kris Gordos) and Debbie Sheppard (Phil); four grandchildren, Indianna and Marley Gordos, Doug and Joey Gardner. She is also survived by her brother Bob Middlemiss and many close cousins. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Bob (2012) and her daughter Linda (1971).

Condolence Messages

  1. Celia and Ken Svoboda :

Bonnie, Kris, Indy and Marley, we are so sorry to hear of Ruth’s passing. We will all miss her. She was one of the kindest individuals that I knew. Once when Ken and I were on our way to Vancouver, our car broke down on the Deerfoot on the 17th Avenue turn off. Ken was at a meeting in north Calgary. Your parents rescued me, picked up Ken, got us to the airport and looked after picking up our car after it was fixed. They also picked us up from the airport afterwards. The MacLaughlin home was a place of hospitality and a great cup of tea. We feel your loss.

  2. Growing up with Bonnie, I had my second parents, Ruth and Bob. They knew how to put on a halloween party for us kids in the neighborhood. When I needed a mended heart, they were there for me with no questions…. My favorite vision of Ruth is on our ride to and from school where Ruth had her hair in curlers (she never had a bad hair day). As we got older Ruth even let us use her car! Brave lady. When we were little Ruth always made beautiful wedding cakes and I remember telling her that if I ever got married that I wanted her to make my wedding cake. Well, even though her illness was limiting her, Ruth still made my beautiful wedding cake. Thank you! I was so happy to see you back home and was lucky enough to spend some time with you before your final day… even getting a kiss. I love you forever…. Ann

  3. Alec J. Deeves :

It was a pleasure and honour to have served with Ruth in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve at H.M.C.S. Tecumseh in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. I also served with both George and Barb Glover at that time. My condolences go out to the family and one of my unforgettable memories is dancing many a polka in the Junior Ranks Mess with Ruth. Both my wife, Anne and myself miss Barb and I will always remember Ruth as a Shipmate and Comrade and a very pleasant person to have known.
    Alec Deeves.
