MACKIE, Norine Anne (nee Comerford)

January 28, 1936 – November 26, 2012

Norine Mackie, beloved wife of Melvin Mackie of Calgary, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2012 at the age of 76 years.

Norine was born in Brantford, ON on January 28, 1936 to William and Catherine Comerford. Upon graduating from high school, she completed her nursing training at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener, ON. In 1959, she and friend Mary Jane made their way out west. Norine accepted a nursing position at the Calgary Children’s Hospital and remained there for many years. Also in 1959, she met Melvin and on June 6, 1964 they were married. Firstborn Patrick arrived in August of 1972 and in January of 1975 Mary Kathryn was born. With the arrival of the children, Norine became a devoted homemaker. She was always there to help with homework, bake cookies, or drive the kids to sporting events. Once the kids were older, Norine went back to work for family practitioner Dr. D.B. Cody, and later, his son Dr. K.D.Cody. Norine was a compassionate nurse, a loving wife, a wonderful mom, a devoted friend and a huge lover of animals- particularly cats. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

An Irish Blessing
May the roads rise to meet you,
May the winds be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again
May God hold you
In the hollow of his hand.

Besides her loving husband of forty-eight years, Norine is survived by son and daughter-in-law Patrick and Catherine Mackie and daughter and son-in-law Mary Kathryn Mackie and Gordon Slemko; two grandchildren, Jeremy and Laura. She is also survived by her brother Jack Comerford (Doreen); her sisters, Frances McConkey (Doug) and Mary Lou Potts; and numerous nieces and nephews. Norine was predeceased by her brother William Comerford.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (835 Northmount Drive N.W.) on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank Dr. Ken Cody, Melissa, Dr. Alain Tremblay, Kevin Huntley – Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, and the AHS COPD Home Care Team for the exceptional care and compassion they provided to Norine. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.
