  18. Lori (nee Shaw) :

    Tom and family,
I went through basic training with Leona (I called her…at her request, “Pugsy”). I included my maiden name as that is how Leona knew me (she called me Shawski). We went on to tackle TQ3 (as it was called then) MP training together in Borden. We shared many laughs together during that time. As I recall, there were only 4 female MPs on course, which meant we all shared one barrack room (4 beds). I am sure Leona would remember Sgt Kish with the clicker boots and laugh at the memory. Needless to say, we shared the good times and the bad times. In that time, I got to know Pugsy very well. She was always trying to get me to learn Polish, which I was not really interested in, but felt honored that she wanted me to be a part of that. Leona called me once (out of the blue) a number of years ago. We did our best to catch up on the years we had missed. She was very much in love with you Tom. It was clear to me in the way she spoke of you. Skye – I don’t believe you were born yet, but your Mom couldn’t wait to be…your Mom. Leona was very kind hearted, a woman of principle and a very kind soul. She made a very challenging part of my life easier than it would have been without her. I am sure many others can say the same thing. I just felt the need to share a part of her that you may not have heard before. Rest well My Friend.

  24. I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Leona. She was an extraordinary person who must have been the light of your life. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
Leona and I worked at Mewata Armoury in the early 1980s. She was bright, energetic, and fun to be around, but as you know this all sprang from a deep, underlying desire to help others and to do the right thing. This is what the police and particularly the military police do; she was a natural.
The circle of individuals who became better people because they met Leona is wider than any of us know.

  28. Dave Fineberg :

Dear Tom and family, I used to be friends with Leona back when I was younger in Montreal, and caught up to her again while living in Calgary. She was so caring my mother wanted to hire her to look after my aging grandmother at the time. I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing, which I randomly dscovered through my wife’s geneology efforts, which often leads to the obituary section. I currently live in Nova Scotia, and am working as a radio journalist, and have two military bases within my beat, so I am constantly reminded as to the excellent calibre of personnel we have in our Armed Forces, and Leona was no exception.

I’m definitely a better person for having known her, even for a relatively brief time a long time ago.

    Dave Fineberg

Deepest sympathies to you and the rest of the family.
