June 25, 1925 – June 9, 2012
We sadly announce that Sheila passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the age of 86 years.
Sheila was born in Elk Point, Alberta, the youngest of six children of Harold and Margery Dorey, who farmed in the Landonville District near Vermilion. She married Wilfred Etherington in 1945, and the young couple moved to Edmonton where Wilf pursued a degree in pharmacy at the University of Alberta. Wilf and Sheila together owned and operated Etherington Drug Store in Jasper Place until 1968, when the business was sold. Wilf returned to the U of A to obtain his degree in biology, after which he worked for the Canadian Wildlife Service. Sheila joined Wilf in his many field studies. Sheila was widowed in 1973 after a wilderness accident took Wilf’s life. She moved to her beloved “Monashee” acreage west of Cochrane, Alberta in 1977, where she enjoyed returning to a more country lifestyle. In 1984 Sheila met and married Charles A. MacDonald, a long time resident of Cochrane. Sheila and Charlie enjoyed twenty five wonderful retirement years together, filled with travel, working on their acreage and socializing with friends, until Charlie’s passing in December 2009. Sheila will always be remembered for her adventurous, independent spirit and her lively sense of humour.
Sheila is survived by her daughters, Beverly Kemsley (Garry Robertson) of Calgary, and Carol Barmeier (Bill) of Saratoga, California; grandchildren, Jyllian Kemsley (Bill Bennett), Cameron Kemsley, Julia Barmeier, Henry Barmeier, Laura Robertson and Christine Robertson; great-grandchildren, Laryn, Patrick and Peter Bennett; and many nieces and nephews.
Sheila was predeceased by her parents; her husbands, Wilf and Charlie; her brothers, Henry, Gilbert and Geoffrey Dorey; and her sisters, Joan McCrae and Betty West.
The family sincerely appreciates the loving support provided by loyal friends and extended family, dedicated caregiver Dawn Koenig, as well as the caring and compassionate staff of Edgemont Seniors Residence.
Memorial Services will be held at All Saints’ Anglican Church (Located 1 block north of Highway 1A on 4th Avenue, Cochrane), on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
