LUKACS, Bernard Michael “Bernie”

January 24, 1925 – December 15, 2014

It is with honour that we release our lovely ‘songbird’ up to the welcoming arms of the Lord.

Bernie passed away at the age of 89, living a vibrant and full life. He was born to parents John and Mary Lukacs of Retlaw, Alberta and raised on the family farm with 10 siblings. He served in the RCAF during World War II and was a councillor for the town of Forest Lawn. He worked as an electrician (I.B.E.W.) until his retirement in 1989. Bernie touched many people’s hearts along his life’s journey. He always had a smile and a joke ready to entertain you. He was always available and eager to lend a hand to both family and friends. Bernie and his family were very musical. In his early years he had his own band the “Calgary Rythm Kings”. He also sang in Barbershop Chorus with the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A, the St. Peter’s Church Choir and any every opportunity he had, to reveal his lovely voice. Bernie was ever resourceful and had a zest for life. He loved golf and was a member of many clubs and organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Royal Canadian Legion #264, the Kerby Centre, Confederation Park Seniors Center and the Go Getters Square Dance Club. For many years he travelled the world with the Friendship Force and endeared himself to everyone he met.

He is loved and remembered by children, Wendy (Barry) Cosens, Dale Lukacs, Shannon (Russ) Urbain, and Keith (Karen) Lukacs; grandchildren, Alex and Laura Urbain, Justin and Kendra Lukacs; sister Irene Clark of Lethbridge; sister-in-law Mary Lukacs; wife Elsie Lukacs (Bittorf), her sons, Warren (Jane) Bittorf and Robin (Sharon) Bittorf; and many dear relatives, extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lucille Lukacs.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church (541 Silvergrove Drive N.W.) on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Condolence Messages

  1. Warren Bittorf :

It was my experience of Bernie that he always had a smile and was willing to help family members when requested, either to sing the National Anthem, hook up some electrical wiring, play a song on his guitar or the piano or just sit and sing an old cowboy song around the camp fire.
He will be missed in so many ways.

  2. We have many fond memories of Bernie playing with our dad, Eugene, with the Rhythm Kings! He is the last one to join his fellow band members and just know they are singing “Out behind the Barn!” Dad always loved playing with Bernie, who always had a joke to tell and a lovely smile! He will be missed! Agnes and family.
