LUFT – Herman Lawrence

July 16, 1931 – July 29, 2011

Herman Lawrence Luft devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, papa and friend passed away peacefully on Friday, July 29, 2011 at the age of 80 years after a courageous battle with cancer.

Herm was born on July 16, 1931 in Calgary, AB and grew up in the Bridgeland/Riverside area of Calgary. He displayed his indomitable spirit at the early age of ten when he delivered bread by horse drawn buggy in the cold Calgary winter. This spirit lead Herm to become an entrepreneur, running his successful printing company Rainbow Lithographers for well over twenty years. Herm married the love of his life Evelyn in 1958 and they were married for forty-nine years. He believed that one should always give back to the community and did so in many ways. Herm served as a member of the Kinsman/K40 Club of Calgary for over forty years, as well as countless boards and community associations. The world has lost a great craftsman, fisherman, cowboy, philanthropist, hobby farmer, and entrepreneur.

Herm is survived by his sons Bruce and Doug Luft; daughter-in-law Sarah Andrews-Luft; four grandchildren Ethan, Zoe, Emma and Madeline Luft; as well as countless nieces and nephews.

Herm was predeceased by his son Brian Luft in 1962, and Wife Evelyn in 2008.

  4. We send our warmest love and blessings to Bruce and Doug, Sarah and children in the loss of their Dad and Grandpa. Uncle Herman is the last of my dad’s siblings—the last of his generation in the Luft family. We consider it a real privilege to be in Calgary at this time, to share , even in a very small way with Uncle Herman’s family in their sorrow. We pray that the God of all comfort will comfort each one of you. Uncle Herman was a warm personality and was very interested in his nieces and nephews–his brothers and sisters children. When I had a stroke–in 2010 he visited me a few times at the Foothills Hospital, driving and bringing his oxygen with him. I really appreciated every contact that Peter and I had with him. I have been very happy to have reconnected with him recently after so many years living out of province and out of country. He was a great e-mail friend while we were in China, and since moving to Calgary, he has had many helpful suggestions for us, which have made a difference. He was so proud of his family. He was a very caring man and had a wonderful way of showing it!
    Sincerely,
    Valerie and Peter Boyko
