LUEBKE, Allan (Al) Charles

January 12, 1925 – Regina, SK
October 13, 2014 – Calgary, AB

In loving memory of Al Luebke, who passed away peacefully in Calgary on Monday October 13, 2014 at the age of 89 years.

Al was raised in Wild Rose, Saskatchewan and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 and graduated as Sergeant Navigator in 1945. He met the love of his life, Gertrude, in the summer of 1944 and they were married two years later in 1946. With Gert’s support, Al earned his Engineering Physics degree with honours at the University of Saskatchewan in 1947. In 1951, Al earned his Masters in Meteorology at the University of Toronto. As a meteorologist, he worked in Edmonton for a year, and then for four years at Goose Bay, Labrador for the Department of Transport. He returned to Edmonton to work for Imperial Oil Ltd. as a computer analyst until moving to Calgary in 1964, where he continued to work with Imperial Oil in Petroleum Research until he retired at the age of 55. Retirement gave him the freedom to further educate himself in the natural resources of Alberta and British Columbia, to enjoy his love of the outdoors by traveling across Canada, hiking, skiing and camping in the Rockies, and sharing time with his family — capturing his love of nature, intimate knowledge of natural history, experiences and adventures with his ever-present camera. Al will be remembered as a loving, modest, humorous, adventurous, intelligent and well-respected husband, father and friend who provided for his family in countless ways. He will be missed so very much.
Al is survived by his loving wife Gertrude of sixty-eight years; two daughters Val (Jeff Loeffler) and Cindy (James Kunz); granddaughters Lindsey and Michelle; siblings Larry, Linda and Shirley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Al’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. 3. Please accept my condolences on the loss of Al. He and I were good friends in our days with Imperial Oil when we were both working as computer programmers. He was a great mentor to me in my initial attempts as a geologist to learn about computers in the S & CS Department. I have lost track of what happened following our time there but always will remember him as a good friend and colleague. Again my sympathies to his family.
