LOVE, Roderick Michael

Born – August 5, 1953
Died – October 26, 2014

On Sunday evening Rod died peacefully at home surrounded by his family and his dogs, as was his wish. He bravely fought a short battle with pancreatic cancer with dignity.

Born in Yorkton, Sask., Rod grew up in various cities in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Nova Scotia finally settling in his beloved Calgary in 1976.

Rod was an amazing, caring, loving husband, father, brother and a prominent politician who was also a diehard Detroit Red Wings fan. He is survived by his beloved wife Charlene, his cherished children, James (Aimee), Katie and Haley, along with his siblings Jackie Sterling, Tom Love, Larry Love and Maureen Love and many extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Bee Love.

Family, friends and colleagues are invited to a Celebration at the Calgary Golf and Country Club (One and one half blocks West of Elbow Drive on 50th Avenue S.W.) on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks you make a donation to the Alberta Cancer Society on his behalf.

    Dear Charlene,
I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy to you and your dear children, James, Katie , Haley and to your family. Losing such a wonderful husband and father …. mentor to many.

My late husband, Jamie Deacey always spoke so highly of Rod ….. and when Rod flew in from Calgary a few years ago to attend Jamie’s celebration of life, he spoke to me with such warmth and compassion. A wonderful man, a huge heart !

    Most sincerely,
    Heather Deacey

  2. Donald K Munroe :

I never knew Rod personally. .
What Paul McCartney and John Lennon
were to music; Rod Love and Ralph Klein
were to Alberta’s political mosaic. All four men
    brought excitement and great success
to their calling(s) of life. They were movers
and shakers of their time on their Earth!
Sir James Paul is the last man standing today.

With deepest sympathy to the Love family,
    Donald Kenneth Munroe

I saw Rod as the wizard with the magic wand. He was always personable and was content not to be center stage. That takes character and Rod definitely had character. There aren”t many like him. He will be missed so very much but he went out by being a credit to himself and everyone who knew him. Say hi to Ralph and GOD BLESS.

Charlene, James, Katie, and Haley; while I only got to know your Dad in the last couple of years I can truly say that I enjoyed every conversation we had. His stories were always humourous, educational and insightful. He was thought provoking, smart and pragmatic which are all attributes I enjoyed about him. You should all be very proud of his accomplishments not only in public life but in his private life as well. I wish you well in what I can only imagine as one of the toughest times in your life.

I baby sat for Jim and Bee Love from about 1951 – 55. I looked after Jackie, Larry and Tommy when Bee went in to have Roddy. Jackie kept asking Bee to bring home a sister. However Maureen came along shortly after. They were such beautiful children. When I saw Rod’s picture he looked so much like Jim I knew that was the family I sat for.
