LOVE – Michael Evans

October 23, 1947 – July 24, 2010

It is with sadness and a deep sense of loss that our family announces the passing of our Mike Love on Saturday, July 24, 2010 after a two year battle with cancer.

Mike is survived by his brothers Jim (Bernice) and Peter (Carol), step mother Betty Love, aunts Rochelle Evans and Una Evans, nephews Jonathan (Kate) Love, David Love, Christopher (Marie) Love, Andrew Love, Russell Love, Chas Love, Neil Love, nieces Lara Tierney and Lisa Tierney, great nephews Thomas Love and Grayson Love as well as numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Ernie and Gwyneth Love.

Following completion of his education in Calgary, Mike earned a BA(Econ) from the U of C. While finishing his degree, he was hired to oversee the construction of McEwen Hall on the University campus, a major project at that time. Mike’s first job after graduating was selling life insurance for New York Life. He then joined the family business, Love Feeds Ltd where he enjoyed a long and varied career in agriculture from 1971 to the present. In addition to being a manager/owner, Mike focused on livestock nutrition (primarily cattle and hogs). His entrepreneurial spirit led him to industry related speaking engagements, specialized research projects and the development of a joint venture hog growing operation south of High River.

Being self employed meant that most of his time was involved with his work and his investment portfolio. But he had a keen interest in down hill skiing, playing tennis and a real passion for music. Mike’s musical enthusiasm was infectious as he was an accomplished guitar and banjo player. His musical career encompassed performances with various ensembles over several decades and countless jams with family and friends at his favourite place to be, Totem Pole Resort on Shuswap Lake where he owned a cabin.

Known universally as “Uncle Mike” to all, Mike truly had a gift of establishing and maintaining a unique and meaningful relationship with others – in particular, with his nieces and nephews. He was an inspiring Uncle and valued mentor.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Camp Chief Hector, YMCA Strong Kids Campaign (101 – 3 St. S.W., Calgary, AB T2P 4G6 Telephone (403) 313 – 3153

Although I have not seen Mike for many years, our friendship goes back to high school years.
Especially remembered will be the wonderful, fun filled summers at Totem Pole Resort shared with the Love Family.
We loved those Family Talent Nights with Mike and Co. playing guitars and singing. And the Tennis Tournaments could rival Wimbledon!
With sincere sympathy to the Love Family; my thoughts are with you.
    I am thinking of you.

Mike was always a part of our lives.

My condolences to the Love family on the loss of Mike. I knew Mike many years ago in high school when we were kids at Wise Wood.. had a lot of laughs, enjoyed some time with the Love’s back then. Although I had lost touch with Mike, today I thought back fondly on some of the humor, the banjo playing, and the rest.

May he rest in peace, and my sincere wishes to you all to help you heal from this loss.

Although we have not kept in touch a great deal lately, I will always remember those times with fondness and gratefulness of the camraderie we shared.
