LOVE, Elizabeth Ann “Betty”

Passed away peacefully in Calgary in her 94th year. Betty was the youngest child of G. Fred McNally and his wife Charlotte. She was predeceased by her first husband, James H. Manning, her second husband Ernest Love, and by her son Robert Manning.

She leaves her loving sons, Gerald Manning (Margaret Stewart) of Ontario and David Manning (Jacqueline Siben) of New York, as well as her loving stepsons in Calgary, Jim Love (Bernie) and Peter Love (Carol). She was a wonderful and engaged grandmother to Cheryl, Catherine, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Jessica, and step-grandmother to Scott, Kathryn, Aura, Kerith, Jonathan, David, Chris, Andrew, Russell, Chas, and Neil (plus seventeen great grands, as she called them). She also is remembered fondly by nieces and nephews and by a host of friends and acquaintances.

All who knew her were dazzled by her memory, her ability to relate to people, and her broad understanding of human affairs. She graduated from the University of Alberta, and after many years of residence in various cities returned to Calgary for a very active retirement and a joyous second marriage. Her life as a widow in Calgary was enriched by her many friends at the Calgary Golf and Country Club and at Grace Presbyterian Church. Central to her happiness and family life was the cottage at Sylvan Lake, built in 1963 and enjoyed by Betty and a multitude of friends and relatives for half a century.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, (1009 – 15 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through The family wishes to offer special thanks to Dr. Jim Mayhew, to Darcia Latimer and her team at Alberta Health Services, and to Sarcee Hospice for extraordinary care during Betty’s final illness. If friends so choose, donations to the James Manning Memorial Endowment Fund in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary, or to a charity of their choice would be appreciated by the family.

In living memory of Elizabeth Love, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. In loving memory of my late Aunt, Betty Love. I am so glad we shared a luncheon date when last I visited my friends and relatives in Calgary. What a joy it was to exchange stories and to gossip a bit with this Super Senior with the heart and mind of a teenager. Her sense of humour was infectious and her laughter contagious. All in all it was a perfect way to catch a full blown case of Betty Love-itis. I hope I never recover.

  3. Stuart McKinnon :

To all of Betty’s family, please know that Willow and I hold you in our hearts as this beloved elder passes. She brought much love, wisdom and sparkle to those whose lives intersected with hers, including ourselves. What a fine example of graceful aging and readiness to lay down one’s life when the time has come.

    With all blessings and love,

  4. My condolences to all of Betty’s family, I intended to attend today’s memorial service but unfortunately had a hospital commitment that I am compelled to honor.
Betty highly valued and loved her family and step family and, I’m sure, would be very pleased and happy to see them gathered together to celebrate her life. She would be especially grateful if some would celebrate her life over a gin and tonic at the end of the day.

Our condolences to all the members of the Manning and Love families. The celebration of her life yesterday was such a fitting tribute to Betty, and illustrative of the enrichment she brought to the lives of her family and friends. Irene and I feel privileged to have known her.

  6. Jack and Katy Threet :

A dear friend of ours for the  past 40 years, Betty will always remain in our hearts as one of the most remarkable friends we ever knew — bright, gracious, generous, kind, caring, sincere, fun-loving, down-to-earth. Early on, for several years, we were blessed to see and be with Betty and Jim in Houston on the golf course and elsewhere. And for the past 25 years we were blessed to be able to see Betty, at first with Jim then later with Ernie, in her beautiful home in Rideau Towers in Calgary. We shall miss her!!
We thank God for her life as we pray God’s richest blessing on her surviving family.
    Jack and Katy Threet, Houston,Texas
