It is with great sadness that the family of Harry Louie announces his passing on June 20, 2011 at the Foothills Medical Centre at the golden age of 100.
Harry was born on February 2, 1911 in China and immigrated to Canada to join his father in October of 1923 at the age of 12. He was among the few surviving immigrants who paid the five hundred dollar Head Tax to enter into Canada. Living in Rossland, B.C. and earning a monthly wage of ten dollars, Harry was nevertheless able to save and ten years later in 1933, moved to Calgary and opened his first grocery store at 1210 – 1st Street S.W., two blocks southwest of where the Calgary Tower is located today. Harry later sponsored the arrival of his wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and two grandsons to Canada where Calgary has been Harry’s beloved home for a large part of seventy-nine years. Retired since 1972, Harry was highly respected within the Chinese Community and acted as a Honorary Advisor of the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre, Advisor of the Calgary Tai Shan Association, senior member of the Calgary Chinese National League as well as Advisor of the Calgary Louie, Fong, Kwong Sue Yuen Benevolent Association.
Above all, Harry was a remarkable father, grandfather, and great grandfather and well loved by his children, Sue May Lau (Frank), and daughter-in-law Pui Wan; greatly missed by his grandchildren Don (Linda), Jake (Virginia), Manuel (Lucinda), Michael (Wendy), and Laura; and an inspiration to his great grandchildren: Grant, Garry, Krista, Mark, Brayden, Callum, Juliana, and Jonathan.
Harry was predeceased by his wife, Jong Yee in 1997 whom he loved dearly for sixty-seven years.
