December 23, 1914 – May 23, 2013

Beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and sister passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

She was predeceased by her husband Louis, sons Ricky and Robert, and brothers Albert, Bernie and Dave Laven. Clara is survived by sons Aaron (Joyce), Barry (Barbara), granddaughter Alicia (John), sister Alice Kalensky, sister-in-law Sharna Laven, her extended family, Diane (Ken) Parker and Lauren (James) Bell and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Calgary, Clara was an excellent student attending Earl Grey School and graduating from the Calgary Normal School. As a child, Clara studied piano at the Ursuline Convent and became a life long lover of music and the arts. In later years she would become a long time subscriber of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Stage West. After briefly studying nursing in San Francisco, Clara returned to Calgary and began a long career as a bookkeeper for memorable Calgary companies such as United News, her brothers’ law practice, Red Top Dog Food, Nissan Automotive, City Savings and Trust and Town and Country Footwear. In the midst of the great depression, she met Louis and they were married in June of 1940 in what Clara always recalled as the “Wedding of the Year”. The next 46 years, would be marked by evenings with friends, bridge and mah jong games, the movies and, in an unexpected turn, as weekend trailer travelers and RV’ers. Weekends would frequently involve outings to Pine Lake and the Banff Tunnel Mountain Campground where Louis, Clara and Ricky would take in the Banff Summer Arts Festival. Following Louis’ death in 1986, Clara took up residence in the Mayfair Place Apartments and then Riverstone Condominiums, moving on to Trinity Lodge in 2011. During this period Clara renewed many old friendships and found fast new friends amongst her neighbours. She continued to host her weekly bridge game with the Riverstone Girls while attending games and social outings at both the Open Door seniors club and the Heritage seniors group. Clara will long be remembered for her cheerful demeanor and optimistic outlook on life. Special thanks to caregiver Wilma who was wonderfully helpful to Clara during her stay at Trinity Lodge.

Funeral Services will be held at the Temple B’nai Tikvah (900 – 47 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. interment to follow at Erlton Jewish Cemetery. Shiva Monday 7:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through Memorial donations in Clara’s memory may be made to Ups & Downs, Calgary Down Syndrome Association, 1940 – 6 Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 0W3.

  3. Richard (Dick) Gotfried :

    Dear Litchinsky Family,
My sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. After revisiting many memories after the loss of Ricky, I am now reminded again of the grace and kindness Clara always showed to our family. A gentle soul, always with a smile and kind word…and the patience of an angel. Again, as shared before, we were so honoured to spend so many special occasions and holidays with Louis, Clara and Ricky as part of our extended family…I am not sure if I ever shared a “small world” story, but I met one of your cousins from Ventura, CA I believe back in 1982 in Hong Kong…she knew 1 person through a friend there (my cousin) and 1 family in Canada and it was yours! 2 degrees of separation and 1 in 30 million! Again, sincere condolences but how wonderful to know that she enjoyed almost 100 years of a very full life! We should all be so blessed…our thoughts and prayers are with you.
