LISCOMBE – Dr. John Robert “Doc”

October 25, 1946 – May 6, 2011

Dr. John Robert “Doc” Liscombe, beloved husband of Morag of Calgary, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2011 at the age of 64 years.

John “Doc” was a loving and devoted husband, brother, uncle and friend. His legacy of love, kindness and selflessness will live on through all of those that he touched in his life.

As an avid sportsman and athlete, Doc especially enjoyed hockey, hunting, boating and … drag racing cars, working on cars, restoring cars, driving cars, reading about cars … CARS!

We now mourn our great loss and reflect on a life well lived. One of his favourite sayings sums it all up, “Doing the right thing isn’t always easy. But it is always right.”

Doc is survived by his wife Morag, two brothers, Dr. Tom and Shirley Liscombe, Dr. George and Jody Liscombe; two nephews, Dr. Travis and Lisa Liscombe and Mike Liscombe; and niece Amy Liscombe. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Isobel Liscombe, and nephew Lester Liscombe.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Dear Morag,
Our hearts are heavy with sorrow at John’s passing. I’m so glad that I was able to speak with him a few weeks ago and hear his uplifting voice. It brought back a lot of wonderful memories of the “good old days” of Activator and Hawaii and fun times that we shared. So much has changed since then and it was great to hear a familiar voice and to hear the optimism he had. I feel sure that he is in heaven and he seemed at peace with God. I know this will be a difficult time now finding the “new normal” and you will be in our thoughts and prayers as you navigate these uncharted waters.

Much love and hugs to all,

Dear Morag, Tom & Shirley, George & Jody, Travis & Lisa and especially Amy &
    Mike,
We extend to all of you sympathy on the transition from Earth to Everlasting of a #1 husband, brother (including in-law) and notably uncle. Many will attest also to his status as a #1 friend, caring and sharing a sense of fraternity uniquely Doc. As a former teammate (pre #8) and classmate, he is unsurpassed among peers and esteemed; we liked him because he made great sense and liked us back. Advice given to Mike by Uncle John applies singularly and forever as a tribute to both. We all benefit by keeping our eyes on the road and a smile in our eyes and visage. We remember a friend who played the game fairly and squarely and earnestly and with a keen sense of fun. Truly, there is no one finer to share a beer with anymore and saddened that our Happy Hours together only lasted 50 years.
    Our love and admiration,
    Anne & Ron

Dear Morag and family- please accept my sincere smypathy in the passing of John – I have been one of his patients since he opened in Bonavista and he went above and beyond when he got me through the funeral service of my husband in 1998 by coming to the funeral home and giving me a treatment as my back had gone out. He helped a lot of people through the years and will be missed by many – Shirley Clare

Jennifer and I offer our highly inadequate condolences to Morag and the entire Liscombe clan.
Also, to all the friends who were mutually shared who will feel the loss and reflect, each in his/her own way as to how John touched their lives. John will be sadly missed as lovely man, who shared his enthusiasm and sincerity openly. I was fortunate to have known him and our last two meetings, at the GCI Reunion and our Grade 9 luncheon, will be memories I cherish always. The world was a better place with him, the man who grew up on street with a tree growing in the middle of it. How fitting to have a memorial tree planted in his honour.

I’m sorry to learn of John’s passing and can only imagine the loss that you are exeriencing. As you know, John was an incredible person and truly a joy to be around. Not only was he a great clinician and instructor, he was the life of the party. I always enjoyed his insights and enthusiasm for Canadian chiropractic and his fantastic stories. I’ll never forget him telling the story of your bus trip in Europe. I reminded him of that when we had dinner together a couple years ago with you in Calgary to his gleaming smile. Without question, he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

I was saddened to hear of Doc’s passing. I am presently away in England on a holiday and will therefore be unable to attend the service on Friday but please know that you will be on my mind now and in the coming days. I worked for Doc for over 10 years and although it has been some time since then we remained friends as well as myself and family patients at the office, Doc was a compassionate man and very enthusiastic about his hobbies both at the garage and at the “ranch” in Little Bow! It was always fun to hear of his experiences,…,like the boat sinking! I am certain there are so many people with many memories and thoughts of their times with him. May you know that he will be missed by those who were friends, family and patients. My sympathy to you all. Joyce Frame (Keith, Shannon and Heather)

  46. Only a few people know the following true story (my wife Kathy, Morag, and a few hotel staff): John and I were teaching an Activator seminar in Calgary about 20 to 25 years ago. The hotel had set up the coffee service in an area that we did not want it to be. Rather than have the hotel staff move the coffee service, John and I took it upon ourselves to move a table stacked with a couple of hundred coffee cups and saucers to a different location. So I got on one end of the table and turned my back to it so that I could lift it and walk forward, while John took the other end of the table. We lifted it carefully and began walking with it. All of a sudden I hear John say (in his Canadian accent muffled by his moustache), Oh No!! This was quickly followed by the crashing sound of a couple of hundred cups and saucers onto a tile floor. You see, the skirt on the table was long and John’s foot stepped on it. As we kept moving it pulled the cups off of the table. That pretty well ended any aspirations that we might have had of working in a hotel.

I will miss the walks on the beach in Hawaii with John. Even though we only were there a few times when he and Morag were there, we always wanted to return each year but couldn’t because of other committments.

John and I were the same age but he was much wiser than me. He knew how to enjoy life and let troubles roll off of his back. I always felt more relaxed and enjoyed life more when I was around him. He will always have a special place in my heart.

We are so sorry for your loss. It was great to read all about John. He sounded like he truly loved life and touched many lives. I still remember that smile. (without the moustache of course) I also remember that he worked on cars. I seem to remember fondly a ride in a bright yellow dune buggy. Was that with John or Tom? I can’t remember. I feel like he taught me how to ride a bike by running alongside me in the Liscombe backyard. I didn’t know his middle name was Robert. I assume that was after my dad. For my dad, all of the Liscombe boys were his boys. (especially since he didn’t have any of his own.) We are very sorry for the entire family. We hope that you have many memories to comfort you. Know also that your family in Ontario is lifting you up in prayer.

  61. Dear Liscombe Family,
My deepest condolences go out to you & the immediate family. I have been a patient of John’s for over 30 years & was totally shocked to see this when I was actually too lazy to look in my purse for his office number… I haven’t asked about John the past few times I’ve been in which is really unusual for me not to do. I was a patient of Tom’s when I was in Nanton & when I moved up here to Calgary, Tom actually gave John’s name… George used to be in the office once in awhile when John was either away at a seminar or off on a business trip. I will miss my friend as he was a genuine good guy & he cared about everyone who passed through his life. He was always in good spirits even when he wasn’t feeling up to par….. The only time I actually ever saw him annoyed was when I showed up for a treatment after not coming for 4 years…. Boy I decided from that time on I would never do that again… & I haven’t.
I hope that all these messages will give you comfort in knowing that John will be deeply missed & that everyone loved him dearly.

    Sincerely,
    Adell
