LIGGETT – Lloyd John

LIGGETT – Lloyd John

August 1, 1917 – September 17, 2010

Lloyd passed away peacefully on September 17, 2010 at the age of 93 years.

Lloyd was born in 1917 in Zealandia Saskatchewan, to Olive and John Liggett. He stayed on the farm until the late 1930’s and left to receive training in sheet metal aviation in California. He returned to Canada and joined the RCAF in 1941 and married Margaret Brandon that same year. He started his flying career as an instructor with the British Commonwealth Air Training Program during WWII and continued with the RCAF for twenty five years, serving two tours of duty in Germany and France as a fighter pilot and staff officer, finally retiring as a Wing Commander with NATO in 1966. Lloyd and his family had happy memories of many trips throughout Europe and the Middle East.

On his return to Canada and Calgary he became a CLU with Canada Life Assurance Company, which he continued with until his retirement in 1971. During that time his commitment to community found him serving as President of the Alberta / NWT division of the Canadian Red Cross Society, he was a proud member and past President of Rotary Club of Calgary (South) 1976/77 and past President of the Institute of Chartered Life Underwriters (Calgary Chapter) and Elder and past board member of Riverview United Church. He enjoyed golfing at Canyon Meadows and hosting many happy meals at the golf club. He was married to Margaret for almost sixty five years and lovingly cared for her in her final years when her health deteriorated. He always tried to find the best in everyone, was a kind, generous and practical man that loved his family.

Lloyd is survived by his three sons, Bill (Shirley), Bob (Carol), and Brian (Gail); six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren

Lloyd was predeceased by his wife Margaret and his brother Charles.

I was a very young fighter pilot on Lloyd’s squadron (414) in Baden Soellingen, Germany in the early fifties. I married my late wife, Shirley, while stationed there and he was kind enough to serve as her surrogate father for the ceremony. He was a warm and thoughtful man and I have always admired him greatly. A first rate squadron commander and a true gentleman.
My deepest sympathies to your family.

S/L Liggett was my mutual partner when we went through the T-33 instructor’s course in Portage la Prairie in 1959. We were both transferred to Gimli where he was promoted and became our Wing Commander Flying. He was a great pilot and an outstanding officer. Both Bev and I will miss he and Marg. May God bless those he left behind.
