LEWIS, Dr. R.D.M Chris

November 3, 1926 – Aberystwyth, Wales
July 2, 2013 – Calgary, AB

On July 2, Chris died peacefully at home in Calgary after a two and a half year illness.

Born in Aberystwyth, Wales, Chris attended Birmingham University where he studied medicine. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Major. Upon his return to civilian life he became Senior House Officer at Leeds General Infirmary, where he met his future wife, Jean. Together they moved to Pentre in South Wales where Chris was in general practice. In 1959 they packed up their two young children, Simon and Susan, and moved to High Prairie, Alberta. There Chris was in family practice for nearly 30 years. In 1964, Chris and Jean welcomed their second daughter, Anne. Over his years in High Prairie, Chris delivered literally thousands of babies, set bones, removed appendices, and performed innumerable services to the community. He was active in local and provincial politics, local service clubs and became one of High Prairie’s prominent citizens. He seemed to know everyone he met.Chris had a love of fishing and photography. A well composed photograph was a joy; a day on the water was equally satisfying. At one point he learned to fly and travelled Alberta in his Piper Cherokee 180. There was always a murder mystery on his bedside table. A voracious learner, he continued to take courses and study until the very end. Upon his retirement in 1988 Chris and Jean stayed in High Prairie for several years and then moved to Calgary, where they have lived for the last 20 years.

Chris is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean, and his children; Simon, Susan and Anne, and grandchildren; Jennifer, Thomas and Richard.

At Chris’ express request, there will be no service. 2. Carolyn Sandor-Weston and Lenie (Helen) Sandor :

Here we are, Mom and I, visiting together in Ottawa reminiscing about High Prairie and the people that became our family for close to 10 years. Many names came across our minds but The Lewis Family, Uncle Chris, Aunty Jean, Simon, Suzie and Anne (and Lester the dog and the black cat clock in the kitchen) have come up in so many stories….you all hold dear places in our hearts. So it is with great sadness that we have just learned this evening that this wonderful man who brought crystal glasses to the beach at Shaw’s Point to sip wine while the kids played has passed away. Uncle Chris brought all 3 of the Sandor children in to this world which is a quite special. We send our love, thoughts and condolences to you all….we know he will be dearly missed.
