LEONE, Maria “Raffelina”

December 16, 1922 – Cosenza, Italy
December 4, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, nonna, sister, aunt and friend, Maria “Raffelina” Leone, who passed away peacefully on December 4, 2017, surrounded by family at the Foothills Hospital.

Maria was a kind and generous, loving soul. She was born in Cosenza, Italy to a family of six kids. Although she grew up during tough times, she always made time for celebrations with family and friends. It was at one of these celebrations that she met her soul mate, Ernesto Leone. In 1959 they immigrated to Canada and made an amazing life together in their adoptive home.

Maria was an avid gardener and loved to share her vegetables with family and friends. Maria loved tending to her flowers, and took great care and joy in having the nicest flowers in the neighborhood. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Maria was a fantastic cook! She especially loved to cook big meals for her family and friends. She always made sure you were 10 pounds heavier when you left her house. It put a smile on her face to be surrounded by her loved ones.

Maria “Raffelina” is survived by her daughter, Brunella; son, Sam Leone; grandchildren, Talitha and Joshua Bryant and their father, Allen Bryant; sister, Anna Leone; brother-in-law, Angelo Amato; brother-in-law, Aldo (Emma Leone); sister-in-law, Maria (Ernesto) Infusino; sister-in-law, Emilia Leone; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families in Canada, Italy and Australia.

Maria was predeceased by her loving husband, Ernesto Leone; by her parents, Angela and Luigi Bilotta; her brother, Carmine (Rosaria) Bilotta; and sisters, Elvira (Luigi) Greco, Maria (Alfredo) Greco, and Ida Amato.

The family would like to thank Paramed Home Health and the staff at the Foothills Hospital.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Parish (1714 – 14th Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Reception to follow at the church. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society of Calgary, 800, 7015 Macleod Trail S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2K6, Telephone: (403)290-0110, www.alzheimercalgary.com.
