December 12, 1918 – August 30, 2013.

Hermen passed away peacefully into his heavenly rest at the age of 94. He was born in Gleichen and raised in Arrowwood, Alberta. In 1939 Hermen interrupted his university education in his chosen field of Journalism to join I Troop, 112 Battery of the Lethbridge Artillery Regiment. He served overseas during World War II, training in England and then serving in active combat that took him through France, Belgium, Holland and Northern Germany.

Post war, he graduated from the University of Alberta as a Petroleum Engineer in 1951. He had a long and distinguished career, eventually retiring from the oil patch at the age of 88. He had worked with a number of oil and gas companies through his career before becoming an independent Management Consultant in 1976 until his retirement in 2006.

Hermen was predeceased by his parents, George and Isabel Leith, his only sister and brother in law, Willa and Frank Clowes and by his beloved wife Margaret in 2012. He leaves to mourn his daughters and their husbands, Willa and Craig; Donna and Bill; his grandchildren and their spouses: Darren, Lisa and Andrew, Daryl and Lori, Karen and Blake, Kim and Mike, Jeff and Carla: 9 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Dad was a man of many accomplishments with wide variety of interests. He was a long time member of the Calgary Petroleum Club, the Glencoe Club in Calgary. He had a passion for horses, as a teenager he was an outrider for the chuckwagon races with the Calgary Stampede in its early days. Later in life he was an enthusiastic attender at the Calgary horse races. Owning his own racehorses and appearing in the Winner’s Circle was one of the many highlights of his life. An avid fisherman and an accomplished woodworker, Dad loved all things literary.

  2. Glenna Beierle :

I worked with Mr. Leith at Tenneco Oil for many years and later with him at ISH Energy Ltd. He was always a gentleman and was kind and considerate of others. I remember going out with him to see his racehorse Peppy. He was so proud of his horses. He was a wealth of information and I enjoyed working with him. My heartfelt condolences to all.

  5. My sincere condolences to Hermen’s family on his passing. I came to know Hermen and his wife Margaret when they lived in the community of Bayview. He was a very good neighbour. He reminded me of a can-do type of guy, so it’s little wonder that he lived such a long, interesting and productive life.
