  2. Biagio IANNACE :

To Cindy, John and Laura I am very sorry for your prescious loss of your husband and father Peter… I had the great honour and privilage coaching football with Peter, it was a lot of fun…. I learned a lot from Peter , espicially on how to be patient, methodical and organized…. I always wished I can be a great speaker like Peter…. I really do miss our after football games debriefing at our unofficial coach’s office at The Bonivista Mall Brewster’s Pub….. We really did our best coaching over a few pints and wings… I know the hundreds of hours of coaching football during a season can take away some other family time, but he was very committed to making other boys learn the great game of football that Peter loved, and he really did want to give back on what he was blessed with… I asked Peter way back in 2005 the process on how we the COLTS can become a association, and he had taken that task to heart and because of his hard work we became an association, only because of him…. His legacy will always be our South Calgary COLTS Football Association …And for that Peter really was a great man and we will all miss him greatly…… Biagio Iannace

  7. Rick and Michele Bilan :

It is with a heavy heart I say goodbye to a man who contributed so much to this world in such a positive way. I loved Peter’s enthusiasm and zest for life. I admired him for his contribution and dedication to football and athletics. His passion and commitment to coaching football in the community and in high school was exceptional. I will always treasure his friendship, sense of humour and competitive nature throughout the many years we spent together as teammates playing touch football. It was also great to rekindle our relationship as high school football coaches, either on the field or sharing time at football clinics. Cindy, Laura and John, my deepest condolences to you all… Peter will be sadly missed but not forgotten.

We are greatly saddened by the loss of Peter. Our paths crossed on the football field with our son Cameron playing and coaching flag football and later playing at high school. We enjoyed those games! And it was made possible by the commitment from Peter and his family. We’ll remember and appreciate his positive attitude and boundless support. Our heartfelt sympathy. 10. Michael Vedress :

It is with a heavy heart I send these words on the loss of my childhood friend. We did so much together as young boys, growing up in the ’60s. We biked the river trails between the University and Broadway bridges. We built model airplanes. His end results so much better than mine. He was so articulate and his attention to detail was second to none. We were both interested in WWII and I still am today. We experimented together getting cigarettes from Rosemarie Leonard and trying those. We somehow got a hold of a 26 of Crown Royal whiskey and along with Dan Fitzgerald we also tried that out, but having sent Pete to the store in Churchill shopping center to get 2 large bottles of Coke. It was raining and he wiped out on his bike and broke 1 bottle. So we had only 1 bottle left. We drank, and drank and all 3 of us got really drunk. But, we survived vowing not to do that again. We played sports, as all young boys did. Playing football one day Pete and I banged heads. He and I were both cut and I carry the scar with me today. We played softball and a game called assburn. Played shinny with a tennis ball and we teamed together to win the Grade 8 badminton tournament. We raided gardens and threw tomatoes at cars and buses going down Taylor St. Sometimes getting chased by angry drivers, but we had preselected spots in which to hide, or yards to scamper through. We never got caught and that was a rush. Then high school. I would walk to Pete’s house and together we would walk or hitchhike to Holy Cross. We usually got picked up by Janine Platana and her dad. And those stylish gray slacks and colored shirts and green sweaters…Yuck. In our later years in school we found new and different people. There seemed to many rules and regulations. This was the ’60s remember, too many distractions. Pete and I drifted apart and I quit school and went to B.C. and back again, never to rekindle our relationship as it once was. I tried but he was at university and out in Alta. Time moved on and the years added up. Marriage and job commitments and kids etc. I have had Pete on my mind quite a bit since Brian R. phoned me with the tragi cand numbing news. I will remember Pete as my friend and schoolmate and in our youth my soulmate. Loved the guy. Michael Vedress.

  15. To the Leier family
we were saddened to hear of Peter’s death. He was a life long friend of my brother Ken’s. I will always remember Peter for the concern he showed to us when Ken got sick and then again at his death. When I think of Peter and Ken and their whole group of friends the true meaning and friendship comes strongly to mind. They may not have seen each other regularly but always kept in touch and knew what was happening in their lives. On behalf of all my family we would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the whole Leier family as their was one Leier for every Burkell on Cairns Ave.. Keep your memories of Peter forever in your hearts and minds for they will help you through this trying time.
    Sincerely Lyle Burkell

  17. Janet Lokhorst :

    Dear Cindy, John and Laura,
My heart sank with the devastating news about Peter. I worked with Peter at Westcoast Gas Services/Engage Energy 15ish years ago . He hired me and let me fumble under his supervision. I have fond memories, sitting in his office hearing daily stories about the adventures of John and Laura – he was a very proud dad. He had boundless energy – like the time the company went on a hike to Mount Yamnuska. His jeep provided the music and his sporty headband provided the humour. He was a wonderfully kind person who always took time for others. His quick wit and endearing charm will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
    Sincerely, Janet Lokhorst
