LeBLANC – Dr. Claude “Doc”

April 16, 1932 – September 3, 2010

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of husband and father Dr. Claude (Doc) LeBlanc, who died on Friday September 3, 2010 at the age of 78.

Born April 16th, 1932 in Sydney, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island, Claude fell in love with the Rocky Mountains and made Calgary his home.

Claude will be missed by his wife of 50 years, Sandra, his children, Mark (wife Terri, granddaughter Alex and grandson Tanner), Paul (grandsons, Blake and Ross) and JD (wife Jean). Of his immediate siblings, Claude is survived by Sister Therese (Marie), Elaine, Anne Celeste, Marguerite, Roland and Paul; cousin Frank LeBlanc (wife Gayle), and his extended family of friends and their children. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers and sisters from Cape Breton; Claude was one of 24 and grew up in the post-war Maritimes. With a series of scholarships, he managed to earn his way into College St. Anne for undergraduate degrees and then the University of Ottawa for medicine where he earned his MD and LMCC. His devotion to and love of medicine emanated from the loss of his mother at childbirth. It was this same love and devotion, but this time to the Rockies, that led to Calgary, where he built a diverse medical practice, in becoming Chief of Staff at the Holy Cross and Rockyview Hospitals and teaching medicine through the University of Calgary. He and Sandra formed a loving family upon which a deep and broad base of friends evolved. His passion for the mountains led him into hiking, downhill and backcountry skiing. With family and friends, he worked his way through just about every hike there was in the Rockies. His passions in life were family, friends, medicine and the mountains.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (5340 – 4th Street S.W.) on Wednesday, September 8. 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca.

In living memory of Claude LeBlanc, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.

  8. Mandy Latiff nee Marsh :

    Dear Sandra and family, please accept my sincerest sympathies. Claude was a kind, caring and compassionate person. You both were good friends to my parents Ken and Sue Marsh. As well, I have wonderful memories from my teen years when I kept my horse at your acreage. I recall one night when the horse got out of his paddock and even though Claude was not a ‘horse person’ he was right in there helping to catch him. Claude was my doctor for over 35 years. He delivered my son David. After every office visit we spent a couple of minutes catching up on news about your family and mine. I babysat Mark, Paul and JD when they were preschoolers so it was great to hear about them. It was evident how proud he was of his family. May your happy memories of him sustain you at this time. All my best, Mandy Latiff

  9. “Doc” delivered me into the world 41 years ago, and I have fond memories of visiting him as a child in his office on Elbow Drive. As an adult nurse, I bumped into him once at the RGH — I introduced myself and told him that he delivered me, and we both had a great laugh.

    My sincerest sympathy to his family and close friends.

    Dear Sandra
    I would like to express my sadness and condolences to you and your family with the passing of your husband and father. I was sent a copy of the newspaper notice by my ex (Marjorie) and felt a great deal of remorse even thou I haven’t seen Claude in fifty years.
    We Interned together at the Calgary General Hosp. in 1960 and because of the intensity of the work, we became a very close group. I well remember Claude’s great sense of humor and the never ending smile on his face. I also recall when he found you, he said right away you would be the girl he would marry. We went to your first home in the trees somewhere near the river just after you moved in as newlyweds. I am sorry we have never kept up but I have been in the U.S for many years.
    Again, my sincerest regret

  59. Dear Leblanc family,
    On behalf of the Anderson family, Colin, Joan and Barry we would like to express our deepest sadness on the passing of Claude. He was our family doctor for many, many years. He will be greatly missed but always in our thoughts and prayers. I little poem below I found that helped me.

    Letter From Heaven

    To my dearest family, some things I’d like to say.
    But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
    I’m writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
    Here, there’s no more tears of sadness;
    Here is just eternal love.

    Please do not be unhappy just because I’m out of sight.
    Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.
    That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through.
    God picked me up and hugged me and He said, “I welcome you.

    It’s good to have you back again,
    you were missed while you were gone.
    As for your dearest family, They’ll be here later on.
    I need you here badly, you’re part of my plan.
    There’s so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man,”

    God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
    And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
    And when you lie in bed at night the day’s chores put to flight.
    God and I are closest to you….in the middle of the night.

    When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.
    Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
    But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain.
    Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

    I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
    If I were to tell you, you wouldn’t understand.
    But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
    I’m closer to you now, than I ever was before.

    There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
    But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
    It was always my philosophy and I’d like it for you too;
    That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

    If you can help somebody who’s in sorrow and pain;
    Then you can say to God at night……”My day was not in vain.”
    And now I am contented…that my life was worthwhile.
    Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile.

    So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low;
    Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
    When you’re walking down the street
    and you’ve got me on your mind;
    I’m walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

    And when it’s time for you to go….from that body to be free.
    Remember you’re not going…..you’re coming here to me.

  65. Sina Zeineldin :

    Its with a heavy heart that I type these word to a great man who is no,longer with us, but will remain in our hearts.

    Dr. Leblanc was refered to me back in 1989, not once did I come to see him in his office where he didn’t have a smile on his face and was always happy to see you. He made dealing with my mdical conditions alot more tolerable.

    Dr. LeBlanc will remain in my heart and prayers to the family my deepest sympathys.

  67. My deepest condolences to Dr. LeBlanc’s wife and family.

    I was just recently informed of his passing and have been very saddened by it.

    Though I wasn’t a patient of Dr. LeBlanc’s, he one day offered to remove a couple of stray stitches leftover from an outpatient surgery I had done at another clinic in 2009. I was immediately impressed with his kindness and willingness to help.

    It is wonderful to see how much of a positive impact Dr. LeBlanc has had on so many people.
