LEAMAN, Larry Edward

Larry Edward Leaman beloved husband of Karen Leaman of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and children at his side, on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the age of 59 years.

Larry was born and raised in Calgary. He married his highschool sweetheart Karen on May 5, 1979. After high school he obtained his Commercial Pilot License, Private Pilot License, and a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from SAIT. Once obtaining his commercial pilots license, Larry worked as a flight instructor with the North American Air Training College at Springbank Airport. He went on to graduate from SAIT with a diploma in mechanical engineering. During a career as a Registered Engineering Technologist his entrepreneurial spirit led him to found three companies, including “Above The Clouds”, a business dedicated to helping people overcome their fears of flying. He ended his career as a Project Manager, with over 25 years of experience and contributions in the natural gas and oil industry. Larry was also very skilled with his hands and completed several major renovations to his family home, in addition to performing most vehicle maintenance on his own. He was a hockey coach, and was avid in golf, skiing, and tennis with his family. He completed several paintings, many which were proudly displayed at home, and maintained a lifelong interest in aviation. He was a fantastic cook, and had a wonderful and unique sense of humour. He served on church council at Hope Lutheran Church, was a member with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta and was also the United Way Area Coordinator. Larry will forever be remembered for his love of his family and friends.

Besides his loving wife Karen, Larry is survived by two children, Todd (Laura) Leaman of Calgary and Brooke Leaman of Calgary; his sister, Jill Gilmore of Edmonton; parents-in-law, Henry and Sonja Rieder; sister-in-law, Brenda Jaeger, her husband Klaus, and their children Linda, Justus, Sandra and Kamilla; sister-in-law, Darlene McLeod and her sons Scott and John; brother-in-law, Barry Rieder, his wife Marva, and their daughter Olivia; his nephew Bill Grady; and his beloved dog Akela. He was predeceased by his sister, Jackie Leaman; his mother Francis Kennedy (nee Finkle); his nephew, Chad Pust; and his dogs Kyla and Dusty.

Funeral Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church (3527 Boulton Road N.W.) on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through The family wishes to thank Dr. Mona Shafey at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre & her wonderful team; Dr. Jeremy deBruyn his Family Physician; Palliative Home Care Team; Chef Michael Noble, Jessica Collinson and the entire staff of Notable Restaurant.   4. I will always hold a special place in my heart for Larry as he was my first and favorite flying instructor. I was always in awe by Larry’s professional and skilled approach to piloting an airplane. I have a photo of Larry and I right after my first solo flight. Larry and I didn’t always know how to act around each other we took along time to see the good in each other, it wasn’t until we renovated the apartment that we really bonded I made him lunch everyday and made sure he had all the help he needed.
