LE, Quan

LE, Quan
October 6, 1979 – Vung Tau, Vietnam
October 8, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Quan Le, beloved husband of Wanda Le (nee Workman) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at the age of 38 years.

The greatest joy in Quan’s life was his family. He is survived by his wife Wanda, and their three darling boys Gavin, Benjamin and Gabriel; his parents Lich van Le and Don Cao; his siblings Mai Jocson (Rey), Vinh Le, Binh Le (Wendy); his mother and father-in-law, Jim and Lena Workman; his brother-in-law Jason Workman (Sarah); nieces and nephews Jessica, Jonathan, Emmy, Lennon, Anna and Thea. His family will forever miss his warm sense of humour, captivating imagination and the joy he brought to their lives.

Born in Vung Tau, Vietnam, on October 6, 1979, Quan came to Canada with his parents at the age of one, where they settled in Nelson, BC, and later Calgary, which has remained his home ever since.

Quan discovered the trombone in junior high and went on to complete Bachelor’s Degrees in Music and Education at the University of Calgary. Quan worked at the Calgary Girls’ School teaching elementary music, junior high band, and choir where his commitment and talent for working with youth shone. Over the course of thirteen years, his ensembles received numerous awards at the local, provincial, and national levels. Mr. Le was a much-loved teacher and he continued to inspire students long after they left the school.

Quan’s passion for music extended well beyond the classroom; he served on committees with the Alberta International Band Festival, Choir Alberta, and on the Board of the Calgary Civic Symphony. Quan’s love of performing continued throughout his life, playing trombone with the Calgary Civic Orchestra. More recently, Quan dedicated much of his time and energy to composing and arranging music, as well as instilling a love of music within his boys; a legacy that will continue on through them.

Loved by everyone who knew him, Quan was a caring person with a generous heart. His warmth, wonderful smile and easygoing personality drew people to him and will be fondly remembered. As well as a cherished husband and father, he was a man of integrity and character, an inspiring mentor to his colleagues and friends. He will be dearly missed.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Quan Le, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  4. Mr. Le was an immeasurable influence on my experience at the Calgary Girls School. His passion for music was valued in every single student who had the opportunity to meet him. Mr. Le always had confidence in me, even when I didn’t, encouraging me to pursue music outside of school. I am eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from such an incredible teacher. No words can describe how sorry I am for your loss.

  5. When tragedies such as these occur, words often feel inadequate – but my heart needs to share the incredible impact Mr. Le had on my life. As an educator he was passionate, caring and inspiring. As a parent, husband and friend he was truly incredible. His warm spirit and dedication to his students made every day a true pleasure to walk into his classroom. I will always remember him working so closely with me to learn how to balance singing in choir and performing in the plays – he truly valued arts education and the impact it has on a child’s life. Mr. Le will not be forgotten, and I will honor his memory each time I sing, sharing the love of music he instilled in myself and all of his students. His passing has truly broken my heart, and in this pain I feel for his family and friends, I will find solace in music, just as I know he would.

  9. Nicole Shipton :

Mr. Le was such an amazing man, musician, and teacher. I hadn’t seen him or been taught by him since 2014, but he still holds a very special place in my heart. My best memories of CGS are with him in the band room. He instilled in me a love of music. He taught me so much about the clarinet and about singing. I know that without Mr. Le, I would not be anywhere near the singer and musician I am today.
For some reason, four distinct memories keep coming back to me. The first being my last day at CGS in grade seven. I’d borrowed a ligature from Mr. Le after mine bent. I needed to return it to him, but I couldn’t find him. I wrote him a note saying what an amazing teacher he was and thanking him for everything. Of course now I wish I could’ve found him and said goodbye in person.
The second memory is him running down the halls at grade seven band camp with a pair of symbols to wake us up. That was one of the first times I felt the sense of family that music brings.
The third is him teaching us how to count eighth notes in grade seven band. For some reason, I can so distinctly picture him drawing out eighth notes and saying “1 and 2 and 3 and…”
And of course, who can forget the fourth memory: Mr. Le rapping Vanilla Ice at the end of the year in choir.
Mr. Le was an amazing man and musician. I hope these memories can reflect that a little bit, even though nothing will be able to show how amazing he was. He instilled such a sense of passion in his students’ lives and he always vouched for them. When I wanted to quit choir, he encouraged me to stay, and now I want to be a music teacher.
I will never forget his spirit, his passion for life and music, and everything he taught me.
He impacted those around him so much and he will be missed dearly.
Wishing his family and all who loved him the best during this terrible time.

My heart is broken. He had the biggest heart and was full of passion and music. You could tell he loved every day he came to work. One of those people you knew was doing exactly what they needed to be doing with their life.
I’ll never forget the motivation and care he put into every one of his students, including myself. He played such an important part in the energy and magic of CGS and the time I spent there. I speak for many of us when I say he was one of the people you thought about immediately when CGS was brought up in conversation or when you reflected upon old memories. I’m so saddened by the news, but I know that he brought a lot of light to all those he crossed paths with.
My love and heart is with Wanda, his family and all of you.

It was impossible to go to his class and come out feeling anything less than amazing. His legacy will live on through every single person he touched, from the CGS community and more. 32. Mr Le was my music teacher from 2006-2009. He not only taught me how to play the clarinet but he also taught me a love of music, how to laugh at myself when I made mistakes, and how to truly enjoy life alongside my friends. Even ten years later, I have so many great memories of Mr Le and the fun times we all had with him as his music students. I can remember how every year at the winter recital the grade 7 band would play Ode to Joy. It was amazing that all these students had been taught different instruments by Mr Le and had only been playing for a couple months and were able to come together and play this song under Mr Le’s direction. It was truly magical.
Thank you Mr Le for everything you’ve done for me and all your other students. You’ve given us the gift of music and friendship and that has been so important to me even all these years later. I’m still friends with all the girls that I was in band with at CGS and I believe our long lasting friendship is due to the way that Mr Le created such a strong community amongst us. My truest condolences to his family. He was an amazing teacher and an even more wonderful human.

It is with great sadness we acknowledge that Quan Le will no longer be with us. I was privileged to have Quan in my concert and jazz band at Forest Lawn High School and also in my Fine Arts Education class at the University of Calgary. He was an inspiration and model for his fellow students because of his work ethic, his enthusiasm, and his talent. As a creative trombone player, Quan added greatly to the quality of our bands both in musicality and in dedication to the music program as a whole. I was thrilled to realize that he too wanted to become a music teacher. At university Quan continued to excel in teaching and learning as well as encouraging his fellow students to strive for excellence. Parents of Quan’s students shared with us their praise and appreciation for his ability as an outstanding music teacher. He inspired his students and constantly demonstrated his love of music. Quan Le’s legacy will live forever.
