January 1, 1931 – July 29, 2012
My mother Ms. Yuet Kan Law was born in 1929 into a large family in Chi Gang Village, Guangzhou. In her youth, she immigrated to Hong Kong, where she met my father Chan Chow Kam. After seven years of dating and courtship, they entered into marriage whereby three children were added to their family: Kim Chung, Mei Yuk, and Kin Leung. Today, she is the grandmother of five, and the great-grandmother of a baby boy named Nathan.
In the early days of my life, I grew up in a very humble home. My mother not only had to work hard to support my father in his work, but she also had to raise up her young. And when my siblings and I finally came of age, our father was diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after. He died two years later. My older brother Kim Chung also died to cancer few years prior. But in the midst of all these adverse circumstances, God remembered my mother. Her immigration application to Canada was approved last February, and she was reunited with my family in Calgary. God blessed her with more when Nathan was added to the family this June; four generations of the family were gathered together in her last days.
In early July, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She died at the age of 83, and rested with God on the 29th of July. We take comfort in her knowledge of the Lord and her baptism at Westside Calgary Chinese Alliance Church in 2006. We know that she has found her rest from all the burdens of life in this world at long last. My mother Yuet Kan now lies forever in peace with our Lord God up in heaven in His eternal glory.
