June 23, 1930 – April 23, 2012

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Leif Laustsen with his loving family by his side on Monday April 23, 2012.

Leif was born in Calgary on June 23, 1930. The family moved to Denmark for two years when he was three before returning to Calgary, and then moved to Carstairs in 1946 where Leif attended high school and met Sheila, his bride to be.

Leif and Sheila were married in Carstairs in 1952, and moved to Edmonton where they began their lives together, raising their four children. Leif worked as a body man, mechanic and foreman for Sunburst Motor Coaches, and subsequently maintenance superintendant for Canadian Coachways and Greyhound.

Leif and family moved to Calgary in 1970 working for Greyhound until his retirement in 1986. Leif, with the help of his family, expanded the old family cabin at Ghost Lake in 1984. Since 1952 when his parents built the original cabin, Leif and family’s home away from home was at Ghost Lake where they enjoyed fishing, sailing, swimming, water skiing, ice boating, relaxing, and entertaining friends and extended family. Leif and Sheila made Ghost Lake their permanent home after his retirement, leaving the city life behind. Leif never really fully retired as he was the consummate handyman and craftsman around his family’s homes and the Lake.

Leif is survived by his cherished wife of sixty years Sheila; sons Ken (Loraine), Dana (Karen), Brian (Marg); daughter Shelley; grandchildren Kendra (Ryan), Daryl, BJ, Aaron, Cole (Heather), Ryan, Nicole, and Kai; great grandchildren Cooper, Emily, Zoe; brother Paul (Lorna). Leif was predeceased by his parents Paul and Emilie, and his sister Lillian.

A private service for family and close friends was held on April 27, 2012 to celebrate the life of Leif.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and other caregivers at the Tom Baker Centre, Cochrane Home Care, and the Salvation Army’s Agape Hospice for their extraordinary support and compassion. In lieu of flowers, Leif and his family encourage donations be made to the Agape Hospice and Tom Baker Centre.

  1. Kelly (Edmondson) Fairholm :

    Sheila and family,
I was sad to hear about Leif’s passing. I have many fond memories of Leif and will always remember how kindly he treated me as a child. My favorite memory of Leif is having him lift me onto his shoulders, as a wee six year old. I felt like I could see the whole world and felt so tall. Take the best of care. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Love, Kelly

    Sheilah and Family,
John and I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to you at your time of sorrow. Having met Leif many times over the years at more happy occasions through Ken and Loraine, we will always remember Leif as a warm and caring person, who loved his family very much and always had time to help build or repair things for his family. Once we came out to Ghost Lake for a wonderful weekend and we were made very welcome by you Sheila and Leif. He will be missed…

    Sincerely, Judi and John Jackson

  4. Stephen Wood :

I was very sorry to hear of Leif’s passing. Leif was a very important member of our little community at Ghost Lake, dock day certainly will not be the same without him. He was a superb craftman, I was lucky to get the last dock he built before he “retired” from that “hobby”. He was a good neighbor. He always had time to chat and his kind manner made even the shyest of my children feel at ease.
I will miss seing him on his frequent walks. On behalf of my family please accept our condolences at this difficult time.
