LARIVIERE, Sharon Ann

August 28, 1938 – Calgary, AB
January 11, 2015 – Calgary, AB

Sharon LaRiviere beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away on January 11, 2015 at the age of 76 years.

Sharon’s lifelong passion was figure skating: first as a young skater and later as a coach for 54 years. Figure skating took her around the world including coaching stints in China, Kuwait, Europe, Chicago, Sun Valley, The Winter Club, and The Glencoe Club in Calgary. She coached a number of national and internationally ranked skaters as well as positively influencing hundreds of other skaters via her long tenure at the Calalta figure skating club.

She was known for her words of wisdom (“Now are you going to be a tiger or do you want to tip toe through the tulips?”), life lessons, sense of humour and her outspoken and forthright ways.

Sharon is survived by daughters Jane and Stephanie (Scott); grandchildren Alice Jean (AJ) and Margot (Maggie); sister, Vicki Adams Willis; aunt, Jean (Chuck) Simpson and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Bill and Alice Adams and brother Ryan Adams.

Due to the amazing support and loving care that she received at the Southwood Hospice, Sharon was able to enjoy the last year of her life immensely.

Funeral Services will be held at The Glencoe Club, 636 29 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB on January 16th, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Not the tallest person in the room, but certainly always one of the most dynamic and captivating. Sharon’s twinkle in her eye and warm smile combined with her accurate analysis and witty observations to make the truth and pertinence of the issues shine through. A conversation with her was always mentally invigorating. She sparked and supported the best in everyone. Never diminutive in her persona, she stood head and shoulders above the crowd. Farewell to a wonderful lady.

My last memory of her is sharing some hilarious stories about my dad while sitting vigil at his deathbed, for which I will be forever grateful. RIP Auntie Sharon.

  12. I first met Sharon when I was a teen skating at the Kelowna Summer School in 1960 – seems like just yesterday. Sharon was such a ball of fire and I loved her instantly. We coached together for a while in Calgary during summer school, and I was fortunate to be on the other side of the “boards” judging her skaters many years later. I always knew which skaters were Sharon’s – they were feisty and always fighting to do their very best, just like their coach. My memories of Sharon go beyond the figure skating world, and I truly admired her ability and determination to meet life head on, and make every situation into something better. Jane and Stephanie, you were blessed with a truly remarkable Mother. I am fortunate to have known her and even though have not seen her for years, will truly miss her. Hugs to both of you and your families.

  13. We are so very sorry to hear of Sharon’s passing. Our family has many wonderful memories from the time she and Valeen coached our kids. She was an important person in their lives: a great, fun loving, no nonsense role model. Passionate about her sport and a stickler about things being done correctly. I know she was loved and respected by many and will be greatly missed.

  15. Dear Stephie and Scott
Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of Sharon. My last memory of Sharon is a chance meeting in some US airport. She was being ferried to some southern location and my husband and I were on our way to the east coast of the US. We were both in a hurry but Sharon still had time to make a joke and add some witty words about the joys of travelling! As mentioned in her obituary, Sharon had a wonderful way with words and expressing herself. She didn’t pull any punches yet one always knew that there was a respect for her athletes. She wanted her students to not only be good athletes but also good people. I always enjoyed being with Sharon and Barbara Graham as they both had a great sense of humor and wit so there were usually lots of laughs and a sense of a good time. Between the two of them, there was so much knowledge about our sport. May your memories of the good times spent together, help you through this difficult time.
    Warm regards,
    Pam Chislett

    To Jane, Stephanie and family,
I had the privilege of getting to know Sharon at Southwood Hospice. We would often meet in the dining room. Sharon and the other ladies would often “look after” my friend Dan making sure he would not eat too fast or get up. Sharon would always say hello, and always looked great. A class act. My thoughts are with you, during this difficult time.

I feel for your loss. I had the privilege to get to know Sharon at the hospice in the last year as a volunteer. It truly was a pleasure to be in her energy, despite her illness she exuded graceful consideration for everyone with elagance and warmth. I enjoyed her wit, and genuine kinship. She was kind, thoughtful and I will miss her greatly as I always looked forward to our visits. Sharon often spoke of her love for her children and her joy for the figure skating world.

Jane, Stephanie and extended family. So sorry to hear about your Mom. It is always an adjustment living without our mom’s. I have a poem on my fridge from when my Mom passed that is very true and I will share the last part.

Your Mom is the place you came from, your first home, your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you – no time, not space.. not even death. Bless you all as you cherish her memory.

    Love from Lindsay and Sharon
