KRIVY – Annie

November 10, 1914 – March 10, 2010

A wonderful, truly kind and sweet person, Annie Krivy, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the age of 95 years. Annie was born in Bellevue, AB, the eldest of four sisters. In January, 1933 at the age of 18 she married Joe Krivy in Calgary. During the ensuing years, she became well known by many in Calgary for her sewing skills which she continued until she was 92 years of age. Annie was always very active in the Slovak community, their organizations and assisting with the arrival of immigrants from Czechoslovakia. Joe died in 1992 after 59 years of marriage. She continued to reside at their home for another 15 years with her cats, driving everywhere (until 90), sewing and travelling. Slowly, her eyesight eroded and in 2007 she entered Southwood Care Centre to be near her sister Katie.

Her loss will be deeply mourned by her four children, Frances (Chuck) Purchase of Rockwood Ontario, Joanna Becker, Gary Krivy and Sharon Krivy all of Calgary. She also leaves four grand daughters, Anna Marie Becker, Leslie Becker, Nicole (Tony Bulhao) Purchase and Andrea (Ed) Sceviour. In 2007 her first great grandchild was born, Declan Sceviour, followed by Braxton Sceviour and Maxliam Bulhao this year. Annie is also survived by her sister Josephine Uhlir of Hacienda Heights California and her brother Lawrence (Sharon) Matusik of Calgary. Annie was predeceased by her husband Joe, her daughter Joanna’s husband Ed Becker (2000) and her sisters Verona Smee (2003) and Katie Perozak (2009). Our thanks to the wonderful staff at Southwood Care Centre who looked after Mother and her family doctors, Dr. G. Haywood and Dr. T. Cran who were always there for her. Her final two weeks were spent at Rockyview Hospital with the very special Dr. A. Tupper and Dr. B. Simmons and staff on Unit 83.

Relatives and Friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’s Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated St. Anthony’s Church (5340 – 4 Street S.W.) on Monday, March 22, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. A family tribute will be delivered prior to Mass. Internment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Forward condolences through

  1. Brenda Willman :

I am so very sorry for all of you upon the loss of your mother. I know what a wonderful and kind person Annie was, welcoming anyone into her home with generosity and affection, and she will be sorely missed by one and all who knew her. The angels will set aside their harps for one day and take up accordians instead. With much love from Brenda.

  2. Sheldon Walker :

I first met Annie 60 years ago when I was three years old and in tow by my mother over to Annie’s house to
get some sewing done. Gary was five then. He sat on a little black wooden footstool and didn’t budge, though our mothers were pushing us to play together. He was older and didn’t want anything to do with a little 3 year old.

Ironically, a couple of years later, the Krivy’s moved into the house next door to our family’s. We all lived on the top of a small hill on 2nd Street S.W. which was later bulldozed to make way for the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing.

Gary and I became fast friends and tobogganed an rode our bikes all over the place. It was a sad day for me when the Krivys moved all the way to South Calgary, close to what is today called the Marda Loop area.

However, though it took me forever to get from the Mission District to South Calgary on my bike and up the hills, we managed to stay good friends until we both eventually went away to university.

I spent so much time in the Krivy family home and always marvelled at just how hard Annie worked at her sewing. There were always piles and piles of clothes and pins and zippers and fabrics. One wonders how she kept it all organized, and how she kept up with it all, since she was so in demand for her excellent work.

I wasn’t suprised to learn in her obituary that she worked up to 90 years of age. She had more energy
    than anyone I ever met.

I am sure there were days when she could hardly wait for me or for some of Gary’s other friends to go home, but she never showed me anything but kindness and a welcoming spirit.

May she rest in peace always.

  4. Dear Krivy Family,

We are deeply saddened by the loss of your dear Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Aunt. Annie was a dear friend to me and my family for many decades. She will be remembered for her kindness and generosity and the many happy times that we spent together. She will be missed and have a special place in my heart forever.

I am accompanying my family on a spring break vacation, leaving March 19, and will regrettably be unable to attend Annie’s prayers and funeral. I will be with you in spirit that day and will say a prayer for you all.

    With deepest sympathy and love,

    Mary Perks and family

  6. Hetty Roessingh :

    Hi Gary,
I noticed that your mum passed away in the last few days … it was easy to see the strong family resemblance, your face shines through hers …. no mistaking who gave you a life and whose boy you are! She seems to have lived a very long and interesting life … you will live to 100! Raise a glass to a life well lived, and treasure the memories of this unique and wonderful woman. My thoughts are with you as this long chapter in your life closes and life goes on without ‘mother’…. it’s an adjustment even at our age, I know. You’ll never really be without her … you live so strongly through her, it shows so clearly. Hetty Roessingh

    Dear Gary & family,

Please accept my sympathy. Losing one’s mother leaves a huge gap. I visited her in Rockyview as part of my pastoral care – her last days seemed so very peaceful.

    With very best wishes,

To the Krivy Family; dear Annie came into my life in the early 1950’s when you lived over by the Holy Cross hospital. Annie made my “going-away” outfit for my wedding in 1958. Then she started making my maternity clothes. I so remember Gary and Joanna. My prayers are with you all. Joanne

  12. Linda Cassidy :

    Dear Sharon, Joanna, Frances and Gary;

My deepest sympathies to all of you. Your mother was a significant part of my life. I admired her positive outlook on life, her keen interest in people, her ability to welcome people into her heart, her ability to create with a needle and thread, her love of cats, her shopping expertise, her love of life, and how she made a house become a home. I have fond memories of having soup and sandwiches on weekends at Mrs. Krivy`s, being driven all over Calgary to Two Jack Lake, Banff and Radium in her white and salmon 1958 Buick, and I couldn’t wait for Annie’s fried chicken. Mrs. Krivy would take me in and provide care and comfort when I was young. Some of my earliest and best memories were with Sharon in a bath tub as Mrs. Krivy would bathe us. I was six and felt I had another mother in Mrs. Krivy. As a teenager my outward appearance was improved by her skill with a needle and thread and my inner strength was fortified because of her love and kindness.

Dad (Joe) had a tear in his eye when we told him and hopes that Camilla and her best friend Annie are together again. They would often sit together not saying a word just enjoying being together and knowing the times they shared.

My children, Jonathan, Thomas and Siobhan and my partner James send their condolences and remember your mother well, always enjoying her company and congenial personality. She was a woman we will always remember.

It is with great joy that I remember Mrs. Krivy. I was privileged to have been a part of her life and will always carry her memory in my heart.
