KRAMER, Ottilie “Tillie” (nee Tabbert)

November 26, 1919 – November 20, 2012

Today, the Kramer family lost its Matriarch. One week before her 93rd birthday, grandma passed away peacefully in her sleep.

The Tabbert family came to Canada in 1927 and homesteaded north of Edmonton. At the age of ten, Tillie became a remarkably accurate shot with a 22, hunting small game to sustain the family after the failure of her first garden. At age twelve, Tillie was left alone on the homestead to care for her two younger sisters when her mother died and her father had to leave to earn money for the funeral expenses. In that same year she and her sister Olga delivered a neighbour’s baby. Later she delivered her nephew Phillip when the district nurse didn’t arrive in time. At the age of fifteen she started her adult life working in Edmonton and at seventeen worked in Champion, AB where she met and married Frank. Tillie’s home was always open to people in need. Many children stayed with her while their mothers were in hospital and many people were recovering from surgery or being treated for cancer. Tillie was an excellent cook, an expert seamstress and a knitting, crochet and embroidery artist. Her garden was always a showpiece of flowers, vegetable and fruit.

She was a pioneer in the truest sense of the word; she could shoot, raise and grow her own food, raised her family with nothing but her instinct to survive and selflessly gave everything she had to ensure her loved ones had what they needed. She was the smartest and strongest woman we knew. She will be dearly missed.

Tillie is survived by her son John (Amy), her daughter Dorothy (Lyle) Webb, her daughter-in-law Jean Kramer, her beloved sister Olga; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Frank, and her son Donald in 2007; by her daughter Jean in 2008 and sisters Johanna and Auguste.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.
